Unusual discoveries for world science day

Little scientists experimented through fun and play

Ahead of World Science Day, students of Primary School Savremena performed interesting experiments in an unusual chemistry class, thus joining their friends, but also the entire scientific community, who use this day to draw attention to the importance of science.

The purpose of World Science Day is to emphasise the responsible use of science for the benefit of society. UNESCO first celebrated it on 10 November 2002.

Where there is research and experimentation, there is fun; because these are the processes through which one learns best. Savremena’s primary students already know lots about chemical elements; now, with the help of their teachers, they learnt how to use a retort and do some unusual experiments. This helped their understanding of natural phenomena, element composition and the chemical equations they can find in books. They helped each other and used sodium chloride (NaCl), or table salt, to discover how compounds in nature react to each other.

By performing these experiments, the students showed that science is present in the life of each of us even when we are not aware of it. Numerous laboratory and practical works, as well as scientific quizzes and games are a staple of Savremena. Experiments in chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, geography and computer science are designed to awaken the students’ interest in the world of science and research. With good fun and wonderful energy, they manage to “play” chemistry.

In other classrooms, they can produce volcanic eruptions, study the human skeleton, do programming, and solve interesting mathematical problems and puzzles. One of the ideas is to use experiments in chemistry and physics to change the traditional opinion about these subjects, where students see themselves as passive observers.

The young scientists were up to the task. They managed to connect theory and practice, and to really experience natural sciences as interesting and exciting subjects. We are sure that for them, the magic of science will never cease to work.

World Science Day is celebrated as part of the Global Education Week. It is an international awareness-raising initiative and a call to rethink our world together, using global education as a tool for solidarity and change.
