SAVREMENA’S PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS VISITED THE SCIENCE FESTIVAL WHERE THEY OPERATED A SPACESHIP, PRACTICED CPR AND BECAME LITTLE ARCHAEOLOGISTS

On Thursday, 5 December, Savremena’s Year 4 and 5 students visited the Science Festival where they experienced the entertaining and useful side of science through interesting experiments.

They left Belgrade Fair full of impressions and delighted that they were able to try out a space suit, pet a snake, and take part in different experiments.

ASTRONAUTS, EXPLORERS AND PROGRAMMERS

The students enjoyed the festival; they were interested in everything and wanted to attend as many workshops as possible.

First they attended the “Coca-Cola in Space” workshop regarding the Apollo 11 mission, after which they took part in a workshop entitled “Knowledge Moves”, where they busted myths concerning energy. Also, they participated in experiments and became little explorers in an escape room.

The students were particularly interested in a lecture on first aid during the “Life Lessons” workshop, during which they learnt about and practiced CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

However, two workshops delighted the students the most: “First-hand Archaeology”, where they explored the Middle Ages and the Paleolithic Age through a new board game and learnt about different phenomena and the most interesting archaeological sites in our country, and “Robotics from the Classroom”, where they developed programming skills using the Microzord educational robotics set.

BUSTING MYTHS WITH THE TEACHERS

The theme of this year’s festival is Revelation, which means the students witnessed the scientific debunking of popular myths and misconceptions.

  • Can we really hear the sea in a shell?
  • Is the Great Wall of China the only man-made structure visible from space?
  • Did we walk on the Moon half a century ago?
  • How dangerous is telephone and microwave radiation?
  • Are we threatened by nuclear plants?

The ever-growing misconceptions are increasingly affecting our daily lives and even the future. This is why scientists decided to deal with them. This time, they received help from Savremena’s primary students, who had fun and learnt many new things.
