March – the month of the Serbian language

Lower and higher grades students marked the month of the Serbian language in different ways

According to the decision of the Association for Serbian Language and Literature, since last year, schools in Serbia have been marking the month of March as the month of the Serbian language with a series of different events.

A school recital competition was held in Savremena, and the students of lower grades especially stood out with their talent. Reciting the most beautiful verses of our most famous poets – Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, Miroslav Antić, and Desanka Maksimović, but also some younger ones like Dejan Aleksić, our three-member jury had the difficult task to choose the best among the best. However, among the lower-grade students, Kira Francišković and Petar Šarac qualified for the municipal competition, and among the higher-grade students, the best ones were Ema Nikolić and Hajdi Gajić. They proudly represented us at the municipal competition and they got only words of praise.

In addition to reciting poetry, using their email addresses, in their Serbian language and literature classes, our students sent their suggestions for the most beautiful word in the Serbian language, as well as for the most beautiful sentence of our folk poetry. Some of the words we would single out, which seemed to our students to be the most beautiful words in the Serbian language, are love, friendship, tolerance, modernity, intelligence, life, mother, teacher, rose, etc.

Marking this month as the month of the Serbian language, we also had debates in class on the topic of how threatened the Serbian language is today and how each individual can contribute to its preservation. The students noticed that we use words from other languages even when we have our own words for that, and they realised the need to use the Serbian language.
