Life Skills Programme: Now we also know how to transplant flowers!

Spring workshop inspired our students

We were eagerly waiting for sunny days to show everything we learnt within the Life Skills Programme!

Students from class III-2 participated in a flower transplanting workshop and thus welcomed the spring sun in the courtyard of our school Savremena. At the beginning of the workshop, the biology teacher explained to the students how plants feed themselves and produce oxygen. Imagine this – plants only need sunlight and water to make their own food and produce oxygen. This process is called photosynthesis.

Like us, plants also grow. Just as our shoes become too small as we grow, the pots also become too tight for the plants. That’s why we decided to give our geraniums a new home in new pots. We learned how to safely remove the plant with the entire root, loosen the root fibres and transplant it into a new, slightly larger pot. We realised that healthy plant growth requires special soil full of nutrients and that some plants don’t need soil at all – like orchids, for example!

Seventh-grade students love biology, so they helped us determine how much water is needed to water our flowers. They even explained to us that not every plant needs to be watered, some plants “drink” water from the tray under the pot, like violets.

In the end, we were so excited about our new plants that we immediately wanted to plant our entire garden! From geraniums, we came up with the idea that we could also plant onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers – who knows, maybe our third-graders will surprise us because they now have a truly different set of life skills!
