Learning from an early age: How to rationally spend energy and improve the quality of life

Savremena’s primary students celebrate World Energy Efficiency Day during a biology lesson

Although Year 7 students know about energy efficiency, World Energy Efficiency Day was another opportunity to once again explore rational energy use and environmental protection.
5 March is an important date when the world celebrates the importance of energy efficiency, and together with their Biology teacher, Dijana Šarac, Year 7 students devoted a lesson to this very topic.

The students have long been applying this concept at home and at school, but it’s always a good moment to discuss and address important topics.

IT TAKES LITTLE TO SAVE A LOT

In an interesting fashion, through a presentation, quiz and magnetic board, the students learnt how little it takes to be energy-efficient and how easily we can contribute to our environment.

The students had a great time, but more importantly, they were motivated to save energy. The lesson encouraged them to pay attention to energy efficiency both at home and at school. This is a continuation of previous activities at Savremena that were often connected to the children’s everyday lives and current topics.

Through the problems they solved, the students gave constructive feedback on how to save energy at home and beyond without affecting our quality of life.

Discussions about energy efficiency are just one part of Savremena’s eco-school concept aimed at raising awareness regarding environmentalism and sustainable development. In addition, many of the students are interested in the school’s environmental club, where they develop their creativity, love of nature and critical awareness about global environmental problems.

THE GLOBAL ENERGY CRISIS MADE US THINK

The first World Energy Efficiency Day took place on 5 March 1998 in Austria, where the participants addressed the global energy crisis and the potential solutions for the first time.

The purpose of World Energy Efficiency Day is to raise awareness about reasonable and sustainable energy use. On 5 March, we should all ask ourselves how we can rationally use energy without lowering the quality of life.
