Kangaroo Without Borders competition held at Primary School Savremena

Students participated in a contest that promotes maths and science

It’s well known how successful Savremena’s primary students are in maths competitions. This time, students in Years 1–4 participated in the Kangaroo Without Borders competition, which took place at their school on 10 June. We can’t wait to see the results.

Students from more than 90 countries solve the same problems chosen by a committee comprising mathematicians from said countries. Kangaroo Without Borders, an international competition that has generated great interest among kids in the past 30 years, is considered a stepping stone for future mathematicians.

“KANGAROO” IS DESIGNED AS A CREATIVE MATHS CHALLENGE

Themain idea behind the now well-known “Kangaroo” is to popularise maths. The goal of the competition is to increase interest in maths and science, and improve children’s logical and combinatorial thinking skills, reading comprehension and application of mathematical knowledge.

Each question in the test has five answers, one of which is correct. The test comprises 30 questions with three difficulty levels (10 questions each), and students in Years 4 through 13 have 90 minutes to solve them.

Students in Years 1 and 2 of primary school get 18 interesting problems split into three groups of six; they have 60 minutes to solve them. The prizes are handed out after the final contest. Primary students in Years 3 and 4 have 75 minutes to answer 24 questions split into three eight-question groups.

The best contestants receive medals (gold, silver and bronze), while the top 10% of contestants in each class get “Tinker” diplomas for their achievements.

SAVREMENA IMPLEMENTS SIMILAR TEACHING METHODS

The tasks in this competition are not typical class material, but rather brain teasers that resemble games more than formal tests.

Various mathematical areas are covered in truly different problems, which is also the approach implemented by teacher Branka Milićević at Primary School Savremena.

Discover truly different maths tests and find out what makes the difference in entertaining lessons at the most modern primary school in the region.

Students, we wish you good luck and we’re sure that you’ll win medals in the “Kangaroo”, just like you’ve done in many other competitions.
