International Mother Language Day

A language survives if it is lovingly nurtured and passed on to younger generations

Do we know how to value our mother tongue? Do we know what it means to us and how we should protect it?

At Primary School Savremena, on 21 February, we celebrated International Mother Language Day in such a way as to point out that every language is important and that by respecting other languages, we also respect our own. The mother tongue is an important part of the cultural identity of people, it represents a way of recognising and preserving diversity, but at the same time, it is a tool for fostering mutual understanding, solidarity and dialogue.

Language is our greatest wealth, and at school, we encourage children to go hunting for such priceless treasures – treasures that multiply by using and sharing them.

All the world’s languages have one common feature: they are enough for native speakers to dream, make plans, learn and love.

We used this day to celebrate linguistic diversity and express the beauty and importance of the mother tongue. We were also inspired by the text of our great writer Aleksandar Gatalica, “What is the mother tongue”, which was published on the RTS website.
