Family weekend at Savremena attracted a large crowd of children and parents

Entertainment for the whole family through interactive workshops and engaging lectures

The previous weekend (6 and 7 April) at Primary School Savremena was dedicated to children and their parents who spent quality time together and had great fun thanks to a variety of engaging and educational content. Family Day, which has become a tradition by now, was held on Saturday, whereas the festival “Parenthood of the New Age” lasted throughout the weekend.

Family Day: Good fun and learning through workshops

On Saturday, 6 April, starting at 10 AM, the premises of Primary School Savremena and Savremena Gimnazija at 5 Masarikova Street (Belgrade Palace) were bustling with playful and inquisitive children eager to see and learn something new, but also to socialise and have fun.

Another unforgettable Family Day for parents and children aged between 5 and 12, organised for the fifth time in cooperation between SPONE Sistem Stimulacije and Primary School Savremena was filled with educational, creative and interesting workshops. The children had the opportunity to operate robots, draw and paint, act, play instruments and sing, play fun math games, create their very first video games, ‘visit’ different corners of the world by means of the VR headset, solve engaging educational quizzes, or participate in various sports activities.

Given that this event is designed for the whole family, it wasn’t just children who had fun and acquired new knowledge. Their parents received expert assessments from speech therapists and psychologists on their children’s development.

Parenthood of the New Age festival: Various tips for parents

While their children were attending workshops, the parents had the opportunity to learn many new things at the Parenthood of the New Age festival held simultaneously at Savremena.

The lectures and panels on the first day of the festival were dedicated to mothers-to-be and parents of infants, whereas day two was planned for preschoolers and primary school children. The attendees got a lot of useful information, tips and different views on parenting from local lecturers and visiting lecturers from the region and all over the world.

Sunday, 7 April, was marked by an interesting panel discussion “What kind of school do we want for our children?” given by the Principal of Primary School Savremena, Jasmina Franolić. She emphasised that our school nurtures innovativeness from the first grade:

“As the organisers, hosts and participants of the panel on innovations in education, we will talk about what education of the new age should look like, and what it is that we can do, on our own and together, to improve this area. At the same time, I’d like to announce that robotics, programming and IT will be part of extracurricular activities at Savremena from the first grade.”

Innovations and IT aimed at improving education quality

She particularly emphasised the advantages of a personalised approach to education, tailored to the needs and affinities of each student, as well as the application of modern technologies in education, and the acquisition of skills needed for success in the 21st century.

Milica Crkvenjakov, video game designer and creator of the Parents of Gamers blog stressed that we shouldn’t be afraid of video games and their impact on children, although this topic is still a taboo for many parents:

“We parents should engage in gaming together with our kids. Although many parents are still sceptical, I’ve tried to explain to them that we mustn’t restrain our children, born in the digital age, from playing video games altogether; instead, we should instruct them on how to approach them. It is no longer enough to know how to turn on the computer and use Microsoft Word. Nowadays, we must know how to write a code, even if we are only able to use the simplest coding software.
