Even Rome wasn't built in a day – but the Solar System of Savremena was!

Creating the heliocentric system with teamwork

English classes at Primary School Savremena have never been more fun and easy to learn.

During their English as a Second Language class, fourth-grade students that attend the Combined Programme came across a lesson that can really confuse people – “Mercury, Saturn, dwarf planets, dozens of moons and millions of stars”. Is the moon a satellite? What is a dwarf planet? And what is more, it’s all in English.

Our students and teacher Katarina Bilali were more imaginative – what do you get when you mix styrofoam, watercolours, cotton wool, toothpicks and sticks? Well, a state-of-the-art solar system!

And while solar systems are formed after several billion years, our students only needed one two-hour English lesson in the Combined Programme. We cut, glued, and created, but also learned all those difficult words in English.

However, for all of us, the most interesting part of this project was teamwork and the excellent organisation of our fourth-grade students. What do you think about the fruits of our creative labour?
