Children’s creativity in full swing: It is time for A Little Foolishness – A Lot of Wisdom

Primary school students participating in the international Biennial of Children’s Artistic Expression – BUDI

Savremena students submitted wonderful works for the 9th international Biennial of Children’s Artistic Expression, the main topic of which is the famous puppet Pinocchio.
Their creations expand into the fields of animation, illustration and literature, so any success at this art festival would be entirely justified.

Many masterpieces and scientific discoveries have arisen from silly ideas. Although they may sound foolish at first, they can develop into the greatest wisdom and beauty. Our students transformed their bold ideas, e.g. to introduce Pinocchio into the world of Minecraft, or to present his character through visual storytelling into effective works, with the assistance and support of their Art teacher, Suzana Vulović.

STUDENTS FACED NUMEROUS CREATIVE CHALLENGES

The biennial includes several categories, so children between the ages of 5 and 15 can submit their individual, or group efforts. When it comes to the visual arts, they can choose between drawing, illustration, modelling, video, or film. They can also embark on a theatrical adventure – creating a play, dance number, or a performance.

We should not forget literary challenges where children can write a poem, fairy tale, comic book, or a story. And finally, the last but not the least interesting category refers to three creative fields: environmental science, innovation, and experiment, where students are invited to design a science-fiction experiment or invention (drawing/video/model) or environmental action – which involves modifying their ideas to fit in with this form of expression.

Our creative student Luka Markićević (V-1) introduced Pinocchio into the world of one of the most popular children’s games, Minecraft. This game is well-known as a powerful learning catalyst, where blocks can be used even to compose music, and which encourages logic, and introduces children into the world of design in an engaging and fun way. Minecraft is more than a game, and Luka has recognised it well.

Zoe Devetak designed an entire visual narrative using the stop-motion technique.

Thanks to her mastery of the frame-by-frame, or stop motion technique, Zoe managed to make it look as if Pinocchio, the cricket and the third figure – a mysterious princess who turns him into a real boy – were moving on their own. This created the illusion of movement when the frames are arranged in order. Well done, Zoe!

Džesika Gorajeb (VII-1) and Lana Milenković (V-1) used the pencil drawing technique to draw Pinocchio.

Students Mateja Baketarić and Milan Dovijanić from V-1 chose colour drawing and plasticine.

Mateja complemented his visual work with a poem in English, Filip Perišić (VII-1) did likewise, except his poem was in Serbian, and Jovana Elek (IV-1) wrote a fantastic short story.

The only question is – is there an end to their creativity?

PINOCCHIO HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN INSPIRATION FOR ARTISTS

The 9th BUDI festival A Little Foolishness – A Lot of Wisdom was inspired by the most famous Italian puppet – Pinocchio. Carlo Collodi, a journalist, sent a few short episodes about the adventures of a wooden puppet and his mischiefs to the editor of a newspaper in Rome. Upon publishing in 1881, the adventures of Pinocchio were an instant success among children, becoming very popular.

This character was later translated into animated movies, plays, comic books, books, and illustrations, gaining planetary popularity. He inspired generations of artists, and we are certain that Savremena students will also be inspired by the adventures of Pinocchio.

This unusual and important contest is a remarkable artistic adventure, and we are certain that success is around the corner, and that our children won’t be disappointed when the results arrive. They already possess talent and creativity – no one knows it better than us!
