World Bread Day: Year 1 Pupils Explore Healthy Eating Through Play and Creativity
Pupils from Class I-1 combined mathematics, Serbian, the world around us and art in a creative workshop dedicated to healthy food
To mark World Bread Day and Healthy Food Day, pupils from Class I-1 at Savremena Primary School had the opportunity to discover the importance of a balanced diet for their growth, development and everyday activities.
Through discussions about healthy habits, the youngest pupils explored different food groups and considered which foods should be included in their daily meals. A particularly enjoyable part of the lesson was a creative workshop in which the children used modelling clay to make fruit, vegetables, grains, fish and other foods that contribute to a varied and balanced diet.
In this way, a familiar everyday topic became an engaging learning experience that brought together knowledge, imagination and practical activities. Through play, discussion and creative expression, pupils explored healthy choices while developing a greater awareness of the importance of good eating habits.
The activity encouraged children to think about the food they eat each day and helped them understand that healthy choices can be both enjoyable and important for their wellbeing.

Bringing Different Subjects Together in One Creative Workshop
What made this lesson particularly engaging was the integration of several school subjects. By connecting mathematics, Serbian, the world around us and art, pupils were encouraged to explore one topic from different perspectives.
Creating food models from modelling clay stimulated imagination, supported the development of fine motor skills and allowed children to explore the ideas they had discussed earlier in the lesson. At the same time, the theme of healthy eating created opportunities to make connections between concepts, recognise shapes and colours, expand vocabulary and understand the importance of different food groups.
At Savremena Primary School, this interdisciplinary approach plays an important role in making learning meaningful, engaging and appropriate for each child’s age. Rather than simply listening to information about healthy eating, pupils were able to express their understanding through their own creative work.
The workshop demonstrated how even a simple activity can become a valuable learning experience when different subjects are brought together. Through creativity and shared activities, pupils also had opportunities to develop communication, cooperation and independent thinking skills.
By combining practical experiences with classroom learning, the children were encouraged to remain curious, ask questions and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Small Habits Today, Important Steps Towards a Healthier Future
Marking World Bread Day and Healthy Food Day gave Savremena’s youngest pupils an opportunity to reflect on their everyday choices and discover why a varied diet is important.
Activities like these help children develop habits they can apply beyond the classroom. When pupils are encouraged to explore ideas and create something themselves, they can more easily connect what they learn at school with real-life situations.
Savremena Primary School places particular emphasis on experiential learning, interdisciplinary teaching and the development of skills that support children’s growth. This is why topics such as healthy eating become much more than individual classroom lessons. They create opportunities for pupils to develop curiosity, creativity and a sense of responsibility for their own wellbeing.
Once again, our Year 1 pupils demonstrated that some of the most valuable life lessons can be learned through play, imagination and creativity.
By making learning enjoyable and relevant, Savremena encourages children to build knowledge and healthy habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.
