When Knowledge Comes Together

An Interdisciplinary Lesson for Savremena First Graders

At Savremena Primary School, lessons are designed to give pupils the opportunity not only to learn through individual subjects, but also to connect, apply and experience knowledge through different activities. Our first graders had exactly this kind of learning experience during an interdisciplinary lesson that brought together Mathematics, Art and the subject The World Around Us into one engaging and creative whole.

During their Mathematics lesson, the pupils worked on the topic of reflection, practising careful observation, spatial orientation and following relationships between lines and shapes. They then connected this mathematical knowledge with what they had learned in The World Around Us, where they explored domestic and wild animals. Finally, everything took on a creative form during the Art lesson, where pupils reflected animal motifs on a grid and showed how mathematical precision can be combined with imagination and artistic expression.

This approach to learning is especially important in the lower grades, as it helps children understand that knowledge is not found only in textbooks, but also in everyday tasks, pictures, shapes and the world around them. Through work, play and creation, the first graders learned to observe carefully, think, try and persevere.

Reflection as a Practice of Attention, Precision and Imagination

Reflecting shapes on a grid was a true little challenge for the pupils. The task required concentration, patience and precision, while at the same time offering plenty of space for creativity and the joy of creating. By observing the given motifs, pupils followed the position of each line, counted squares, noticed the direction of the drawing and tried to transfer the shape as accurately as possible.

What made the task especially interesting was the fact that the motifs were connected to the animals they had learned about in The World Around Us. Domestic and wild animals became part of a mathematical and artistic task, so through one activity pupils revised knowledge, developed logical thinking and practised artistic expression. In this way, ducks, elephants, bulls and other motifs were not just drawings, but an opportunity for children to recognise the connection between nature, mathematics and art.

During the activity, pupils showed great dedication. They held their pencils carefully, checked their lines, corrected small mistakes and compared their work with the given model. Some completed the task quickly and confidently, while others progressed slowly, step by step, but everyone showed the same desire to succeed.

The classroom atmosphere was focused, cheerful and encouraging. The pupils were concentrated, persistent and very proud when they saw their completed work. These moments show best how powerful learning can be when it is connected with experience, creativity and a sense of achievement.

Learning that Makes Sense and Encourages Curiosity

The interdisciplinary lesson for Savremena first graders showed how important it is for pupils to learn from an early age to connect different areas of knowledge. When Mathematics moves beyond numbers and exercises, when The World Around Us becomes inspiration for drawing, and when Art becomes a space for applying precision and logic, learning becomes more natural, engaging and closer to children.

Through this activity, the pupils did not only practise reflection. They developed fine motor skills, visual perception, spatial awareness, attention and perseverance. They learned to follow instructions carefully, observe details and not feel discouraged if something did not work on the first attempt. Every line, every square and every completed motif was part of a process in which the children built confidence in themselves.

The most beautiful result of the lesson was the pupils’ happy smiles and the pride with which they showed their work. Through play, effort and connecting knowledge, Savremena first graders once again showed that learning is most successful when it is lively, practical and creative.

This lesson was a wonderful example of how Savremena Primary School nurtures an interdisciplinary approach to teaching, curiosity and the joy of discovery.
