What does creative education at Savremena look like? Attending a Serbian language lesson at the school library
Students of the fourth grade spent a break between lessons with a book in their favourite corner – the school library. Supplementary lessons of Serbian language and literature, literature club, creative education for little dramatists and future novelists, journalists, or public personas are held in the room harbouring thousands of interesting books.
They picked books to read with the help of their teacher and had a lively discussion about literature.
Which book to choose?
Some of the books younger students opted for, wanting to embark on a magical journey with the heroes, included Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Neverending Story. One girl from the fourth grade travelled around magical worlds with Alice, whereas her friend explored the land of Fantasia with the hero and shared his impressions with us:
“I read about elves, silver flame, black centaur, and I somehow identified with the boy hero, Bastian. This is something else! I love reading!”
Meanwhile, another student chose The Little Prince revealing he read this book twice already. “It is only in the heart that one can see rightly” said he, quoting the fox, and recommended this book to his friends.
Same as the protagonists of these books, the students embarked on a journey to magical worlds to learn and discover something new.
Out of the box – stimulating imagination and exchanging opinions
Creative education and encouraging students to embark on a journey to fantasy worlds has several goals, the main one being:
- Thinking outside of the box, or the ability of creative problem solving.
By exchanging opinions about the worlds they travelled to with the book protagonists, students are learning to express their own and accept other people’s opinions, and by discovering the meaning of literary works, they are expanding their horizons, building a unique world of their own, and learning to cope in different worlds and circumstances that life brings.
