We celebrated the European Day of Languages

Through play and fun to understanding and openness to other cultures

European Day of Languages, an initiative aimed at promoting language learning and understanding of other cultures, was celebrated in our school as well.

Since 2001, when this initiative was launched by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the European Commission, European Day of Languages has been celebrated every 26 September. Its goal is to promote the cultural and linguistic diversity of the Old Continent.

Through team discussions about the importance of learning foreign languages and getting to know different cultures, this day was marked in our school as well. On this occasion, we all reminded ourselves of the languages we study in class, but also those we learn from popular culture, through movies and music. One of the tasks was for students to write lyrics of their favourite performers as representatives of the countries they come from on a map of Europe. Everyone was focused and engaged, and in this way, students simultaneously refreshed their knowledge of art, music, and geography.

In Serbian language classes, students explored interesting and less-known facts about European languages, and from the interesting facts they found, we created a Kahoot quiz, which you can find at this link.

This European Day of Languages in Savremena, as a multicultural environment, also served to help students learn more about each other and thus gain mutual respect and understanding.
