The story “Hedgehog’s Home” through children’s imagination

An art workshop by first-grade kids

First-grade pupils at Savremena Primary School took part in an art workshop inspired by one of the most beloved children’s stories – “Hedgehog’s Home”. After talking about the characters, messages and warmth of this wonderful story, our young artists had the opportunity to express their impressions through drawings filled with colour, imagination and carefully created details.

Their artworks featured little forest houses, trees, paths, meadows, hedgehogs and many other elements that reminded them of the world from the story. Every drawing was different, special and personal, because each child understood and represented the story in their own way. Some focused on the warmth of home, some on the beauty of nature, while others highlighted the cheerfulness and courage of the main character.

This workshop was much more than a drawing activity. Through artistic expression, the pupils developed creativity, focus, confidence and the ability to present their thoughts and emotions on paper. The classroom was filled with the joy of creation, and every finished piece showed how beautifully children’s imagination can bring a literary world to life.

When a Story Becomes a Drawing

The workshop began with a reminder of the story “Hedgehog’s Home” and a discussion about why home is important, what it means to love the place we belong to and how we feel when we are safe, accepted and surrounded by the things we love. The pupils carefully observed the illustrations, remembered their favourite parts of the story and talked about the hedgehog as a character who teaches us that love for home is not measured by its size, but by the feeling of belonging.

After that came the most colourful part of the lesson – drawing. The first graders chose their colours, planned their compositions and added details that made their artworks unique. On paper, little houses appeared under treetops, windows shone in the sunlight, forest paths led through meadows, and cheerful hedgehogs proudly guarded their homes, just like in the story.

During the activity, the pupils showed great dedication and a strong wish to present their ideas in the best possible way. They exchanged ideas, commented on details, encouraged one another and proudly showed their finished drawings. Through this task, they connected literature and visual art, developing not only creative skills but also a deeper understanding of the story’s message. In this way, “Hedgehog’s Home” became an inspiration for small works of art full of warmth, tenderness and children’s sincerity.

Imagination, Colours and a Beautiful Message About Home

The most beautiful part of the workshop was the moment when the pupils presented their artworks. Each child held their drawing with a smile, proudly showing how they imagined Hedgehog’s home and the world around it. These works revealed much more than lines and colours – they showed children’s attention, understanding of the story and genuine joy in creating.

Through this activity, the first-grade pupils showed that literature can be a powerful inspiration for artistic expression. The story took them into a world of forest life, friendship, warmth and love for home, and they enriched that world with their own colours and ideas. Every drawing carried a special emotion and showed how carefully children can listen, imagine and create.

At Savremena Primary School, we especially value activities like this because they allow pupils to learn through experience, play and creative expression. When a story, colour and imagination come together, memorable moments are created – just like the smiles of our first graders as they presented their little artistic worlds inspired by “Hedgehog’s Home”.
