The little artists designed book covers on International Design Day
Savremena’s designers: Using imagination to illustrate our favourite works of literature
This year, International Design Day and World Book Day overlap; a fact that generated unusual ideas as answers to the question: Can students design covers for their favourite books.
The answer was clear, as the kids produced wonderful design solutions that were displayed and awarded in a school exhibition.
There were three prize categories: best design and illustration, best typography and best creative solution. According to the project mentor, Art teacher Suzana Vulović, the children showed remarkable creativity and imagination, and 10 best pieces were awarded in the three aforementioned categories.
The books chosen by the students are masterpieces of children’s literature, a selection that confirms the children’s talent. The books include: Beauty and the Beast, The Boy and the Dog, Eagles Fly Early, Rapunzel, The Little Prince, The Neverending Story, Bridges, The Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland, and everyone’s favourite, Harry Potter.
The following students received the prizes: Zoe Devetak (VII-1), Divna Milić (V-1), Maša Đuričković (VII-1), Mina Drezgić (V-1), Valentina Vlašković (VII-1), Zara Grujičić (V-2), Natalija Nikolić (V-2), Sofija Popovska (V-1), Lena Lešnjak (VI-1) and Anastasija Nikolić (VI-1).
THE EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTED THE STUDENTS’ TALENT AND PROVED THAT READING OPENS UP NEW WORLDS
World Book Day and the interesting week dedicated to literature underlined the power of reading and the importance of this activity for students of Primary School Savremena. Just like they said in their excellent vlogs on literature, when they read, they focus on the essence of the book and often come back to their favourite heroes. And some of them are even writers themselves!
This is why the idea of teacher Suzana Vulović to invite students to design covers for their favourite books delighted the little ones, who immediately sprung to action. The outcome of this activity? Amazing design, great fun and, of course, a school exhibition that adorned the school walls this sunny April.
GOOD DESIGN IS ALL AROUND US
International Design Day, celebrated on 27 April, was established in 1963 to commemorate the founding of the International Council of Design in London. On that day, we celebrate graphic design, an art form that’s all around us and we’re not even aware of it.
Everything around us is designed: TV ads, images in our favourite newspapers and magazines, interesting T-shirts, etc. What applies to other art forms, applies to this one, as well: “There is never one solution”. Imagination is the X factor that sets apart the remarkable from the average. Savremena’s primary students found their own way to use their imagination to illustrate the world of literature. And it was a resounding success!
