Students for students: learning about a healthy diet
Second-graders held one of the most interesting lessons in peer education
Peer education is a highly important educational segment at Savremena. This time, the activity was conducted “from students to students”. Namely, students in Years 2 and 3, members of the culinary club, visited classes I-1 and I-2 in order to share their knowledge of healthy eating.
At first glance, the students are too young to have advanced knowledge about food. However, it was really interesting to hear what they know and do. Thanks to culinary club activities, they quickly learnt how to prepare and cook food, and gained insight into the nutritional value of certain ingredients.
The little ones gained food-related knowledge they will always find useful
Unlike many of their peers across Serbia, students of Primary School Savremena have gone through several stages in which they learnt about the importance of a healthy diet, good eating habits, choosing healthy ingredients over harmful ones, the preparation of (for now, simple) dishes, table manners and the ways to serve food.
This is already important for their lives, and will become even more important in the future. What’s important is that the foundation has been set and that they have the right attitude and knowledge about food and, therefore, themselves and their environment.
Peer education for developing basic life skills
There’s no greater happiness than sharing knowledge with others. The second-graders revised what they learnt in class in the best possible way: they became teachers themselves! The students visited their friends in Year 1 and told them everything they had learnt.
The students were surprisingly mature and eager to share their knowledge. They explained what it’s best to eat using a food pyramid they made out of cardboard. The colorful ingredients are logically classified based on their nutritional value.
On the other hand, the first-graders showed a high level of creativity and the willingness to cooperate. It is really nice and important that many of them quickly mastered the basics of healthy eating. This type of peer education enabled them to learn about the topic from their slightly older friends.
