Science and technology through a unique LEGO challenge
Savremena’s primary school students participate in First LEGO league
At Primary School Savremena, preparations have begun for one of the world’s biggest competitions, FIRST LEGO League, created with the aim of making children interested in science and technology and teaching them important and useful life skills.
All participants in this unusual league develop skills such as robot programming, teamwork, presentation skills and many others.
In order to prepare as best as possible, a lecture was given by Bogdan Drešević from the “1%” Foundation, which organises the competition. The tournament will be held in late January next year at the First Kragujevac High School in Kragujevac. The winning teams will go to the regional competition in Slovenia. Regional winners will take part in the world championship, which will most likely be held in America.
Savremena’s students aged 9–16 will have the opportunity to compete with over 200,000 peers from around the world. All teams will be tasked to assemble and programme LEGO robots, do research, design an innovative solution, and present the project on a given topic.
Everyone knows about LEGO, but this is a completely new level. Primary school students applied for FLL (FIRST LEGO League) and they took it very seriously. An FLL set was purchased, which contains a polygon, a set of LEGO bricks and assembly instructions. Based on that instruction, they prepared a design brief. The idea is for all participants in this unusual league to develop skills such as robot programming and teamwork, presentation skills and many others.
They used LEGO Mindstorms (EV3, NXT or RCX) or Spike Prime in order to establish how to set the boxes and complete the tasks.
In good spirits, the students asked many questions to which they received prompt replies, after which they got down to LEGO business:
