Savremena’s third-graders visit Museum of Science and Technology in Dorćol

We blended play and science because that’s the Savremena way of learning

Third-grade students visited the Museum of Science and Technology, which contains over 5,000 objects from different fields. It is hard to tell what impressed them more – the science playhouse, or the toy gallery which contains over 150 objects/toys dating from between 1920 and 1970.

The Museum of Science and Technology preserves technological inheritance and encourages research in the sphere of history of science and technology; it was designed to be child-friendly, in order to help raise the awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

Fascinated by science playhouse

The science playhouse, always available at the museum, was designed to promote learning through discovery, participation, experimentation and direct contact with scientific challenges.

The interactive pieces introduced the students to the phenomena from the realms of astronomy, mathematics, physics, biology, psychology and logic in a fun way, engaging different senses and abilities to drive children towards contemplation and imagination.

In an immediate way, through play, the children expanded their knowledge of scientific principles. It was not all new to the third-graders, as Savremena implements the STEM concept of education, designed as a combination of several academic disciplines: science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The visit to the Museum of Science and Technology was a part of the implementation of this approach.

The kingdom of last-century toys

Inspired by the work on recycling they did as part of Savremena’s Finnish education project, where they refurbished and reimagined their old toys, the children could hardly wait to see this museum’s toy gallery, which hosts over 150 objects – toys from the time between 1920 and 1970: dolls, cars, teddy bears, metal mechanical wind-up toys, wooden toys, music boxes, a steam machine model, a railway station model…

Belgrade’s Museum of Science and Technology is a cultural institution of national importance; Savremena’s students will surely return there.
