SAVREMENA’S STUDENTS TAKE PART IN GLOBAL HOUR OF CODE EVENT
On Friday, 13 December, Primary School Savremena organised Hour of Code, as part of the global Computer Science Education Week that takes place 9–15 December around the world. Year 5 students learnt about various educational resources on the Hour of Code website, which they tested and analysed, applying their programming skills.
This way, our students and Primary School Savremena found themselves among the institutions supporting this global event and the development of students’ digital literacy.
In addition, the students used the block-based programming app RoboBlockly in order to develop their programming skills. The students were delighted by the chance to apply their knowledge and skills and partake in this global event. These interesting activities were organised by teacher Dragan Kreculj, who registered the school for this international movement.
WHAT IS “HOUR OF CODE”?
The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code” and show that anybody can learn IT basics. Today, it comprises more than 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide, and has developed into an organisation.
Hour of Code events take place in over 180 countries during the Computer Science Education Week, in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (9 December 1906). Also, hosts can organise Hour of Code all year round.
The mission of the Hour of Code movement is to make IT learning available to every student, as it develops problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. They state that by starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. Among them are the students of Primary School Savremena, who gain and develop IT skills from day one. Hour of Code is another way for them to test and expand their knowledge.
