Savremena’s students promote healthy habits: Celebrating Apple Day
Students at Primary School Savremena nurture healthy habits every day in the healthy environment of their school, and this time, we celebrated Apple Day. Parents joined the educational lesson and tasting of this healthy food, helping teachers present all the interesting facts about the apple and its importance for health to the students.
The students also solved compelling interactive tasks, gaining new insights about apples:
Did you know a citizen of Serbia eats 14 kilograms of apples on average per year? I’ve only found out about it today, as well as about how good apples are for our growth and health. I’ll eat apples every day because I want to be strong and healthy! – explained one first grader enthusiastically.
Apple Day
Apple Day has been celebrated in October since 1990, and it involves various events promoting and celebrating this healthy and delicious fruit. The aim of this event is to highlight the health benefits of apples, and point out all the different varieties of cultivated apples.
The students celebrated Apple Day by taking part in different workshops dedicated to this food, and promoting the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Little researchers expanded their knowledge of health at interactive workshops and evaluated apple flavours
The tasting of this delicious fruit wasn’t the only task for our students. They travelled through ‘knowledge stations’ with their parents and the teacher which encouraged them to find answers to all question thus learning everything about apples. However, this game also roused all their senses, and they concluded that each apple is unique in its own way and tastes different. Those who preferred sour flavours to sweet ones were few, but everyone was eager to taste all flavours.
This way, students are taught to make conclusions and express their opinions, and this is something we at Savremena insist on from the very first day.
How first graders created Apple Journal
Apple Journal is a creative magazine our first graders designed as part of the celebrations for Apple Day. Since they learned everything there is to know about apples, evaluated various flavours and aromas, had their senses roused, the little creative artists were given a task of transferring their knowledge and feelings to paper.
The front page of the Journal is one-of-a-kind joint effort of all students, and another way for Savremena students to promote equality and friendship. This way, first graders were able to express their creativity, and the apple booklet each of them received will remind them of this interesting day in the years to come.

Primary school students gained new knowledge and engaged all their senses through play, but even that wasn’t enough for little artists. Besides apples and a lively children spirit, other ingredients included crayons, tempera paints, clay, even leaves, so children came up with an excellent idea:
Who says apples are just for eating? Let’s make something interesting and beautiful using apples!
Students used all these ingredients to create intriguing and creative collages and compositions to add to their autumn corner. This way, little artists learnt new art techniques, and transferred autumn motifs and inspiration arising from them to their creation.
From the art to the literary club: third graders listened to a moral story The Boy and the Apply Tree and reached a unanimous conclusion on what the genuine values are through a conversation with their teacher and parents.
New insights, quiz and a healthy competitive spirit among fourth graders
Fourth graders checked their knowledge of apples in a quiz they solved on a tablet or a computer. A healthy competitive spirit was this time manifested in the speed with which the little ones competed to give a correct answer. They also got interesting math problems the solution of which required them to utilise their newly acquired knowledge.
This is how our fourth graders celebrated Apple Day, and they also helped their fellow students from lower grades to decorate the school and finally joined the tasting.
