Savremena’s students bring medals from “FIRST LEGO League” competition
Team of five roboticists travels to Kragujevac to represent the school
On 23 May, Savremena’s students participated in the “FIRST LEGO League” competition, that took place at the First Kragujevac Gymnasium. Our team comprised five students and two teachers. They competed with nine teams from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and won medals in two categories!
The results, that have just arrived, confirm our belief that talent and effort never fail to yield success. Primary School Savremena’s students are no strangers to “FIRST LEGO League” – they had encountered this extraordinary competition before.
Let us recall that this competition takes place in over 100 countries, including Serbia. Globally, over 35,000 teams apply for the programme.
GAMECHANGERS – TEAM SET TO CHANGE THE WORLD
At this year’s “FIRST LEGO League”, Savremena was represented by the team called “Gamechangers”. Its members are Dušan Šušilović, Vuk Pantić, Aleksandar Nenezić, Filip Perišić and Vanja Pavlović, mentored by Maja Erić and Milić Vukojičić.
Through this competition, the students have entered the realm of programming, already familiar to them from their lessons at school. At school and in this competition alike, the connecting thread is the idea that programming facilitates the use of logical thinking in problem solving.
This year’s event marked the debut of all the members of “Gamechangers” at this competition, but they were sure of their knowledge. Dušan Šušilović explained why he finds “FIRST LEGO League” interesting:
“For me, the most interesting part of the competition is robot design and assembly, as I somehow feel it as my calling and just love it”, said Dušan.
See a great video about “Gamechangers” shot just before they left for Kragujevac:
The results followed quickly: the students stood out in a competitive segment dedicated to innovative projects and received medals for their participation in this prestigious gathering of talents. Their innovative project was named “EcoHealthyBot”. It is a robot whose role is to raise the awareness of the importance of being physically active, and to connect technology, environmentalism and healthy lifestyle.
Kudos for the idea! And for the medals, too!
“FIRST LEGO LEAGUE” – STEM THROUGH FUN AND EXCITING PRACTICAL LEARNING
“FIRST LEGO League” is a global programme that presents science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to children through the use of didactic materials and LEGO Education sets, where the joy of problem solving and fun comprise the essence of the entire competition.
Through four competitive segments (Core Values, Robot Design, Robot Game and Project), primary and secondary school students take part in the intellectual and creative process of making an innovative project, constructing and programming a robot, completing missions and presenting their results to the judges.
Winners from Serbia’s “FIRST LEGO League” will go to Slovenia for the regional competition, whose winners will qualify for the global event in the USA.
