SAVREMENA’S PRIMARY STUDENTS CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE

A SERIES OF CREATIVE WORKSHOPS TO CELEBRATE THIS DAY

On 11 February, the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The goal of this international day is to encourage women and girls to choose a career in science. With this in mind, the teachers at Savremena organised a series of workshops for the students!

In ICT lessons, teacher Ira Tuba pointed out the importance of girls’ education in this field. One segment of the workshop was dedicated to creating pearl bracelets designed to show the manner in which a computer identifies data. Each bracelet represented an IT code. Emphasis was placed on the fact that women in science made highly important discoveries – they discovered pulsars; they found proof of the existence of dark matter; they were among the first to explore radioactivity, nuclear
fission, and maths; they wrote the first program; they discovered the first “bug” and much more.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE

The idea behind the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was proposed by the Commission on the Status of Women. In 2011, the Commission adopted a report at its 55th session, which called for equal access to decent work and full employment and “participation of women and girls in education, training and science and technology”.

In December 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution which recognised that participation of girls in women in STEM research and innovation is crucial for achieving gender equality. Two years later, on 22

December 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. According to UNESCO (2014–2016), only around 30% of girls opt for STEM studies at university. Global statistics show that few girls study ICT(3%), natural sciences, maths and statistics (5%), or engineering (8%). It is believed that stereotypes are the main reason why so few girls choose STEM programs at university. Therefore, at Savremena we teach our students to foster equality, and we are happy that we are preparing them for the future in the best possible way.
