Opera as an unforgettable experience

Savremena students visit the National Theatre

As part of their study of musical and stage works, eighth-grade students of Savremena Primary School had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of opera in a unique and inspiring way. Moving beyond theory, the lesson was enriched with a memorable real-life experience – a visit to the National Theatre, where students watched one of the most famous operas of all time, “La Bohème” by Giacomo Puccini.

This type of learning plays an important role in helping students better understand art, as it connects classroom knowledge with real-world experience. Entering the impressive building of the National Theatre, admiring its elegant interior, and feeling the anticipation before the performance all contributed to the excitement and curiosity of the students. For many of them, this was their first time attending a live opera, making the experience even more meaningful.

While watching the performance, students were able to recognize elements they had previously learned about – musical interpretation, vocal technique, scenography, costumes, and expressive acting. In this way, theoretical knowledge came to life, leading to a deeper understanding and a stronger interest in this art form.

An encounter with art that leaves a strong impression

During the performance of “La Bohème,” students experienced a powerful combination of music, drama, and visual storytelling. Strong vocal performances, an emotional narrative, and carefully designed scenography left a lasting impression on everyone present. Students were particularly fascinated by the way emotions are conveyed through music and voice, which gives opera its unique artistic strength.

After the performance, students eagerly shared their impressions. They discussed the characters, their motivations and emotions, as well as the universal themes presented in the opera. Such discussions encourage the development of critical thinking and a deeper understanding of artistic works.

Teachers used this opportunity to connect the experience with classroom learning, emphasizing key elements of opera and encouraging students to express their opinions. This made learning interactive, dynamic, and personally meaningful.

An experience that inspires future encounters with art

Students’ reactions after visiting the National Theatre were overwhelmingly positive. Their enthusiasm and desire to attend similar events clearly highlight the value of this type of educational activity. For many students, this was the moment they truly understood the power and beauty of opera.

Stepping outside the classroom and experiencing art in an authentic setting has a long-term impact on the development of cultural habits and interests. Students not only acquire new knowledge but also develop a sense of aesthetics, empathy, and critical thinking.

Inspired by this experience, students expressed a desire to continue exploring the arts and to visit the theatre again. Moments like these confirm how important it is to provide children with experiential learning opportunities—because knowledge that is truly experienced becomes lasting and meaningful.
