Savremena students devised a new compelling game

Proving that literature can be fun

In the last week of the first semester, Year 6 Serbian Language and Literature classes were dedicated to reviewing and recapping the teaching material related to literature. Since the unusual and epic biography of Marko Kraljević left the greatest impression on our students, texts about him (both folk and IP) were chosen for review. This particular review task required students to create playing cards and design the rules for a new game.

Another proof that classes in Savremena are truly different. Through play and creative thinking, Savremena students reviewed the material from Serbian Language and Literature classes, and designed the rules of a new card game.

RULES OF SAVREMENA CARD GAME

The main hero is, of course, Marko, and his main opponent – Musa Kesedžija. To win, a player needs to collect cards with the pictures of Marko’s war horse Šarac, his spiked mace, fairy Ravijojla, and a special trump card with Mother Jevrosima. To boost Marko’s strength, players need the “tavern” card, “wineskin” or “roast mutton” card. On the other hand, Musa Kesedžija also needs to collect his weapons, and trump cards with his three hearts in order to boost his strength and combat readiness.

The teaching material about Marko was reviewed in the classroom abuzz with laughter. Anyone who dared to draw wine in a small glass was bound for a poor grade, because such a small glass would be an insult to Marko’s great appetites. Students who remembered to search for the Mrnjavčević family coat of arms online to draw it on the back of the cards were sure to get an A.

The class featured texts from the Year 6 Reader (folk epic poetry, An Orphan Foal by Svetlana Velmar Janković), as well as the feature-documentary series Serbian Medieval Heroes, the episode dedicated to Marko Kraljević.

To preserve their creations, Savremena students eventually plasticized their cards.

We are sure that Savremena students will remember this Serbian Language and Literature class, because they enjoyed it so much that their time in class literally flew by. Another match of this awesome game is scheduled for next semester.
