Savremena's class 5-2 reports on volcanoes and earthquakes

A different and more interesting approach to geography

Our fifth graders class were cast in different roles and given a script for a truly different report on volcanoes and earthquakes. Students behaved like seasoned professionals, preparing a wonderful lesson with the assistance of their teacher Marko Ostojić, and learned a lot through play. The aim of this lesson was to give students the opportunity to showcase their talent for journalism. One student was cast in the role of a television presenter, other two students were field reporters, while a fourth student was cast as a reporter from Primary School Savremena.

At the very beginning, the students prepared all the material and props needed for the realization of a sample lecture with the help of their teacher, and embarked on another exciting adventure.

The field reporters had guests (two students each) who were tasked with describing their impressions and the environment after surviving a volcanic eruption, or a tsunami. This way, all students were able to imagine certain phenomena that would indicate an impending volcanic eruption or a tsunami, as well as their consequences.

Other students were divided into four groups, where two of them had the task of preparing a display on volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. The display had to explain the scientific facts behind a volcanic eruption, parts of a volcano, famous active volcanoes, as well as the mechanics of an earthquake.

The remaining two groups drew panels to serve as the background for field reporters, giving the impression that they were indeed reporting from different locations.

We also had a surprise guest

Our Serbian language teacher was a guest of the project. She played the role of a weathercaster, and tried to guide students to apply the knowledge acquired in the project by presenting a series of false facts.

After that, students had the opportunity to participate in the live program by asking questions to the weathercaster, or pointing out the errors she had made during the program. The geography teacher systematized the material, and reviewed it with students, who were very enthusiastic about the project, and expressed a desire to use a similar approach to covering learning material in the future.
