Hippo, the English language Olympiad is becoming a tradition! Students of Primary School Savremena were once again given the opportunity to compete with their peers from all over the world, demonstrating their knowledge of English.
The number of primary and secondary school students who applied for the Olympiad from all over the world exceeds 40,000, so the competition was strong. Despite the record number of participants, as many as six students of Savremena qualified for the semi-finals.

The results are excellent! Six students qualified for the semi-finals scheduled for late May: Maja Milutinović, Vuk Virić, Mateja Baketarić, Milica Trikić, Luka Markićević and Petra Janev. All of them have remarkable English skills and many of them speak English as if it were their mother tongue.

The competition takes place in three rounds: preliminary, semi-finals and the finals. The preliminary round took place on 23 April. Those who qualify for the semi-finals will continue the competition in late May, and those who jump over this hurdle will be invited to the final round of the Olympiad which takes place in Venice, from 19 to 21 September.

NURTURING A HEALTHY COMPETITIVE SPIRIT AND CULTURE IS THE MISSION OF THIS COMPETITION

This unusual and creative competition encourages the development of a common sense of identity and integration, and serves as a role model for young people to live together as a community. It primarily promotes English and welcomes all potential contestants from all over the world who want to test their knowledge of English. In addition, the event also helps improve the cooperation between teachers.

The official name of the competition is Hippo – English Without Borders, and some of the things it insists on since its establishment in 2012 are achieving international understanding and a spirit of good sportsmanship among young people from all over the world.

LAST YEAR’S PARTICIPATION WAS MORE THAN SUCCESSFUL

Savremena students of Year 5 already participated in the Hippo competition last year, where Lena Lešnjak and Lilita Milčić won the maximum number of points. They worked hard, but they also had fun. Despite the situation with the coronavirus and the fact that the event had to be held online, they felt as if they competed in the real Olympiad – testing their knowledge against the best students from all over the world.

And this competition is just one in a series of activities our students can participate in throughout the year. In addition to interesting extracurricular activities, Primary School Savremena strives to provide our students with an opportunity to test their mettle against their peers from Serbia, the region and beyond in accordance with their age. And the unwritten rule turned out to be – fantastic results are inevitable year after year.
