Students of Primary School Savremena solemnly celebrated Saint Sava’s Day with a recital where they presented their knowledge and talents to parents and teachers, after which they visited the Church of Saint Sava in Vračar, familiarising themselves with the history of this magnificent edifice.

An important role in the celebration of Saint Sava’s Day was entrusted to over 80 parents who attended the ceremony and answered students’ questions, and the best three were awarded commemorative books.

Various talents of Savremena’s students

Students of Primary School Savremena celebrated Saint Sava’s Day in the best possible manner – with song, dance, art, oration and a knowledge quiz.

The celebration of the school’s patron saint’s day began with a choral performance of songs honouring Saint Sava and continued with the first and second grade students demonstrating their skills in the traditional “kolo” dance; third-graders presented their recital skills, fourth and fifth-graders showcased their skills in the dramatisation of orations, whereas fifth-graders gave a lecture titled “The Life and Work of the First Serbian Enlightener and Archbishop”.

Everyone had fun, and learnt something new, although this was just the beginning of Saint Sava’s Day festivities.

Students tested their moms and dads

After the students demonstrated their knowledge of Saint Sava, it was the parents’ turn. Savremena organised an educational quiz where students tested the knowledge of their parents. Parents also demonstrated a respectable knowledge about the life of Rastko Nemanjić who renounced the throne, entered monastic life and was reborn as monk Sava. The best three were rewarded with commemorative books.

In addition, the parents had the opportunity to see the mosaic representing Saint Sava made by their children. To say they were impressed is an understatement, so it’s no surprise that the mosaic was displayed in the most prominent place at the school.

Trip to the Church of Saint Sava’s crypt

After the Saint Sava’s Day ceremony, all students of Primary School Savremena embarked upon an educational school trip to the Church of Saint Sava. There they were greeted by Deacon Radomir Vrućinić, professor at the Belgrade Faculty of Orthodox Theology which was named after the first Serbian enlightener.

Students of Primary School Savremena had the privilege to enter the crypt of the largest Orthodox church in Serbia and to familiarise themselves with the history of this edifice. Children listened enthusiastically and hung on every word of Deacon Radomir and finally went home full of impressions.

Saint Sava’s Week before Saint Sava’s Day

The commemoration of the most important school holiday at Primary School Savremena had begun long before January 27, given that the whole week preceding this day had been announced as Saint Sava’s Week at Savremena.

Among other things, Saint Sava’s Week was characterised by project-based teaching where students learned about customs regarding the Serbian “slava”, assembled a mosaic of Saint Sava, and organised a humanitarian action “For Our Fellow Students” , in which students of Primary School Savremena and their parents donated toys, school supplies and candies for their peers who were forced to flee their homes in present day Croatia during the war of the 1990s.
