Parents at Work: Visit to Elcom Trade

Learning Through Real-World Experience at Elcom Trade

As part of the Parents at Work project, fourth-grade students had the opportunity to step outside the classroom and gain authentic insight into the world of work in a real business environment. This time, they visited Elcom Trade, a family-owned company run by the Arsenović family, which specialises in the import, export and distribution of air-conditioning systems and is the official distributor of the Midea brand.

The visit was designed as a comprehensive and educational journey through the entire business process — from the arrival of products at the warehouse, through storage and servicing, to sales and administrative organisation. For the students, it was a valuable opportunity to see how a modern company operates “behind the scenes” and how many different skills and professions are involved in creating products we use every day.

From the Showroom to High Racks: How the System Works

The tour began in the showroom, where students learned about the differences between residential, semi-professional and professional air-conditioning units. Through discussion and demonstrations, they discovered how heating and cooling air is produced, why not all air conditioners are the same, and which systems are used in homes versus large factories, sports halls and industrial facilities. This part of the visit was especially engaging, as students were able to connect theoretical knowledge with practical, real-life examples.

The next stop was the warehouse, featuring high storage racks reaching up to 12 metres. Students saw how air-conditioning units arrive from China, how they are packaged, stored and organised before distribution. A particularly memorable moment was when, under full safety supervision and professional guidance, students had the chance to be lifted by a forklift and platform to heights of 6 and even 10 metres. This experience sparked the greatest excitement and enthusiasm, while also opening discussions about workplace safety and responsibility in large logistics systems.

Service, Spare Parts and Offices: The People Behind the System

In the service department, students were introduced to the technical side of the business. They observed how air-conditioning units are repaired, how pipes are cut, and how refrigerant operation is checked through high and low pressure systems. The head technician, Marko, patiently answered all their questions, explaining the importance of knowledge, precision and experience in this line of work.

They then visited the spare parts department, where they learned why each component plays a crucial role in the long-term and safe operation of the devices. The visit concluded in the offices, where students gained insight into the administrative side of the business: ordering, customs procedures, sales and overall system organisation. It was there they truly understood that a successful company functions as a team, with every role being equally important.

Throughout the entire visit, students were curious, confident and full of questions. The Elcom Trade team showed great patience and openness, making a genuine effort to explain every aspect of the company and ensure the visit was both enjoyable and inspiring.

Visits like this hold special value, as they help students connect school knowledge with real-life practice, raise awareness of different professions and encourage them to think about their own interests and future career paths.

A big thank you to the Arsenović family and all employees of Elcom Trade for their warm hospitality, time and knowledge, which they generously shared with our students.
