Parents at Work project: Year 4 students visit Rotam

Students from class IV-1 at Savremena Primary School explored different departments and discovered what a professional working environment looks like

What does a company look like behind the scenes, and what is involved in its everyday operations? Students from class IV-1 at Savremena Primary School had the opportunity to find out during a visit to Rotam, organised as part of the Parents at Work project.

Thanks to cooperation with parents, the Year 4 students exchanged their classroom for a professional environment and explored the different spaces where employees carry out their daily responsibilities.

The visit began with a tour of the customs warehouse, after which the students continued exploring other areas of the company. They visited the warehouse, service department, administrative offices, directors’ offices and showroom, gaining an insight into different aspects of business operations.

This experience allowed them to see how many different roles exist within a single company and how these roles are connected.

For Year 4 students, a visit like this is an engaging way to discover different professions and expand their understanding of the world around them. Instead of following their usual school routine, they had an opportunity to explore, observe and discover what adults’ workplaces look like.

This is one of the key benefits of experiential learning, which allows children to connect what they learn at school with real-life environments and experiences.

From the customs warehouse to the showroom

The tour of Rotam allowed students to explore different areas of the company’s operations, from spaces used for storing goods to the service department, administrative offices, management offices and showroom.

One particularly interesting part of the visit was the customs warehouse, which was also the first stop on their tour. Afterwards, students explored the remaining areas and gained a broader understanding of how work is organised within the company.

The different departments demonstrated that running a business involves much more than what customers see in a showroom. Behind everyday operations are various professions, tasks and responsibilities, with each department playing its own role.

For children who are beginning to discover the world of careers, experiencing a real working environment can be particularly valuable. By observing actual workplaces, they can develop a clearer understanding of concepts such as organisation, cooperation, responsibility and the division of tasks.

This approach also encourages curiosity and helps students connect new information with their existing knowledge. Instead of relying on abstract explanations, they can observe concrete examples that bring the adult working world closer to them.

The visit to Rotam therefore offered the Year 4 students a different educational experience, turning the exploration of a professional environment into an opportunity to learn more about different careers.

Parents at Work: When schools and parents work together

The **Parents at Work** project connects school education with parents’ professional experiences, allowing students to discover different careers through workplace visits.

Thanks to this cooperation, students from class IV-1 had the opportunity to explore Rotam and become familiar with an environment that is very different from their everyday school routine.

Activities like this are particularly valuable because they introduce children to professions they may not have considered before. They also help students understand the importance of different roles and how people with different responsibilities contribute to a shared working environment.

At Savremena Primary School, cooperation with parents is an important part of the educational process. Their involvement in activities like this enriches students’ learning experiences and creates new opportunities to explore the world beyond the classroom.

Through the Parents at Work project, students do more than simply discover what workplaces look like. They also begin to develop an awareness of their own interests and the opportunities they may wish to explore as they grow older.

The visit to Rotam was another example of how an ordinary school day can become an engaging learning experience, with a real-world encounter offering valuable insights that students can take back to the classroom.
