Observational learning in geography classes

What does interesting geography look like in practice?

In their geography class, the 5th-grade students covered the teaching unit called “Rocks”, and on that occasion, they learned about the rocks that surround them, their different ages, chemical composition, texture, colour, importance and how they serve humans.

In order to make it easier for them to understand and acquire the complex learning material, such as igneous rocks formed from magma or metamorphic rocks formed by changing the chemical composition, the teacher brought different samples of rocks.

During this lesson, in a practical way, the students had the opportunity to identify by touch what kind of rocks they are, and to notice different minerals (such as muscovite) that participate in the composition of the rocks and make them shine. The students also shared their own impressions and favourites.

The aim of the class is to bring geographical concepts and complex mineral structures closer to the students in the simplest, most practical and most imaginative way possible. The students pointed out that the class was very interesting for them and that it helped them to grasp the new material better and as effectively as possible.
