Lessons with Halloween costumes and tasty pumpkins
Scary costumes are equally exciting and useful for getting rid of fear
Ahead of Halloween, a holiday that has long been observed in the USA, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, a fancy dress party took place at Primary School Savremena. The celebration is always a good opportunity for children to learn how to face fear in a safe environment.
The students and teachers’ costumes were highly creative. The students came to school dressed in their favourite scary costumes, and what awaited them was truly different – Halloween lessons.
In addition to having lessons behind masks, the students also enjoyed Halloween-themed parties and, of course, pumpkins. They showcased their costumes, dressed as scary creatures – monsters, vampires, zombies and witches. The students also learnt about the culture and customs of English-speaking countries, where Halloween originated from, thus expanding their knowledge, not just through theory, but also by directly experiencing this unusual holiday.
While some students had skeleton, zombie and vampire costumes, others were dressed in pumpkin orange. The students shared candy, laughed, sang and played. They scared the fear away and the smiles were always there – behind the masks.
Choosing the best costume was a difficult task. However, the winners were eventually selected and awarded a prize – “Scary Stories”, a book written by their older friends from Savremena Gimnazija.
One of the main decorations around the school were pumpkins. On Pumpkin Day, the school premises were decorated with teachers and students’ creative hand-made ornaments. What’s more, everyone treated themselves to tasty baked pumpkin prepared by the school culinary club.
The little chefs also went shopping for ingredients. Together with teacher Branka Milićević, students in class III-1 took their task seriously and headed to the New Belgrade green market to purchase the pumpkins.
