Interdisciplinary class - combination of computer science and geography for engaging learning

Learning about volcanoes through virtual reality

Lessons at Savremena are truly different, and we often practice interdisciplinary instruction, combining different subjects so as to help students expand and enrich their knowledge in an original way and in a more engaging environment. Year 5 students loved this class, because they learned about volcanoes through virtual reality.

The interdisciplinary class of computer science and geography was held with students of V-2 class who had the opportunity to use VR headsets to learn more about volcanoes, what they look like, and how they work.

In the introduction, the geography teacher informed the students about the course of the lesson and the teaching methods. For the first five minutes, students watched a short video about volcanoes to familiarize themselves with the lesson.

During the main part of the lesson, a group of six students used the VR headset, while the others searched information about volcanoes on their phones, drew and wrote. The geography teacher explained parts of a volcano and asked questions, after which everyone had to describe what they saw. Their answers ranged from witty, creative to interesting and insightful.

Toward the end of the class, students summed up their impressions and reviewed the lesson with the teacher’s aid. They underlined that this type of class means a lot, because it helps them gain a more realistic picture of distant lands and abstract concepts.
