A Board Game Made of Modelling Clay
The classroom of class 3-1 at Savremena Primary School turned into a small workshop filled with imagination, colour and children’s ideas. The pupils were given the task of designing and creating pieces for their own board game, and they approached the challenge with great excitement, curiosity and teamwork. Modelling clay became the material through which they shaped heroes, obstacles, symbols, fields and details that made their games unique.
Each group developed its own creative approach. Some pupils made animals, some designed unusual characters, some created colourful markers for moving through the game, while others shaped small objects with special roles in the rules. Behind every piece there was an idea, and behind every idea there was discussion, agreement and shared decision-making.
This activity showed how meaningful learning can be when play, art and teamwork come together. The pupils practised listening to one another, suggesting solutions, accepting different opinions and turning their ideas into something visible, creative and useful. Through this process, they discovered that a simple piece of modelling clay can become much more than a material – it can become the beginning of a story, a game and a shared achievement.

From Idea to Game: When Modelling Clay Becomes a Learning Tool
Working on the board game was much more than a creative task. By shaping their figures, the pupils developed fine motor skills, precision, patience and concentration, as well as abilities that are essential for everyday learning – cooperation, communication and planning. In order for the game to work, they needed to create rules, agree on the roles of the pieces, plan obstacles and connect all elements into one meaningful whole.
Around the tables, a true team atmosphere could be seen. The pupils carefully chose colours, shaped tiny details, tested different ideas and helped one another whenever something became challenging. Some drew maps and fields, others made small clay characters, while others created names and special tasks within the game. In this way, each group built its own little world, inspired by shared imagination.
It was especially wonderful to see how proud the pupils were whenever they finished a figure or came up with a new rule. Their creations were not just decorative details, but parts of a story they had invented themselves. Through this kind of work, children learn that knowledge is not separate from play. On the contrary, play gives them the opportunity to explore, create, think, solve problems and build confidence in their own ideas.
Smiles as the Most Beautiful Result of Teamwork
The most beautiful part of this activity was the pupils’ smiles as they watched their ideas take shape. Every little figure, whether it represented a hero, an animal, an obstacle or a special symbol, carried the personal touch of the child who created it, as well as the contribution of the whole team. This is exactly what makes such lessons valuable – children create together, learn from one another and celebrate shared success.
Through their modelling clay games, the pupils of class 3-1 showed that creativity has no limits when there is a good idea and the support of friends. They practised being careful, persistent and open to suggestions, while also discovering that every small decision can contribute to a great group result. Their board games became a blend of art, logic and children’s imagination.
At Savremena Primary School, we believe that moments like these are an important part of growing up. When pupils have the opportunity to explore, shape, discuss and present their ideas, they develop skills that go far beyond the classroom. This activity was another reminder that the most meaningful learning happens when children create with joy.
