From car design to the basketball court: Year 3 pupils discover two fascinating careers

One parent, two very different professions and plenty of curious questions about cars and basketball

Year 3 pupils at Savremena Primary School welcomed a special guest, one of their parents, who came to introduce them to his two very different professions. One involves designing motor vehicles, while the other is connected with basketball. Both topics immediately captured the children’s interest and inspired plenty of questions.

First, the pupils discovered what it means to work as a motor vehicle designer. They were particularly fascinated to learn that their guest is also involved in designing cars. Naturally, they wanted to know how a car is created, what knowledge a designer needs and what a typical working day in this profession looks like.

However, the biggest surprise came when they discovered his second profession. Their guest is also a basketball referee evaluator, a role that the children found perhaps even more exciting. They learnt that his responsibilities include observing and assessing the work of referees during basketball matches, which led to even more questions.

The visit gave the pupils an excellent opportunity to discover professions they may not have known much about and to hear directly from someone who works in these fields.

Experiences like this make learning more interesting and meaningful because children can ask questions freely, take part in conversations and discover just how varied and fascinating the world around them can be.

From cars to basketball: Curiosity takes the lead

The discussion about motor vehicle design introduced the pupils to the world of engineering and technology. Through conversation, they had an opportunity to discover how important knowledge, precision, creativity and careful planning are in the work of a designer. Cars, which they see on the streets every day, suddenly became even more interesting as they began thinking about how they are actually created.

Then the conversation turned to basketball and a profession that many pupils had probably never heard of before. Their guest explained what a referee evaluator does, describing how he observes and assesses referees during basketball matches.

This part of the visit was particularly exciting for the children. How can someone tell whether a referee has made the right decision? What happens when a referee makes a mistake? How well does an evaluator need to know the rules of basketball? The pupils were eager to learn more, and every explanation sparked further curiosity.

By exploring these two professions, the children had an opportunity to think about the different responsibilities, rules and skills involved in professional life.

At Savremena Primary School, this kind of active learning is an important part of the educational approach. Children are encouraged to participate, ask questions confidently and think independently. Opportunities to meet people from different professional backgrounds help them connect classroom knowledge with the real world and develop a deeper understanding of the subjects they explore.

Learning that opens new horizons

At Savremena Primary School, helping children understand how knowledge can be applied in everyday life is an important part of education. Alongside regular lessons, pupils take part in activities that introduce them to different professions, encourage conversations with professionals and help them discover subjects they may never have explored before.

Visits from parents who share their professional experiences are particularly valuable because they allow children to learn through direct conversation. Instead of simply hearing about a profession, pupils can discover what a typical working day involves, what challenges people face and which skills are needed to succeed.

Through experiences like these, pupils develop communication skills, critical thinking, confidence and the ability to ask meaningful questions. At the same time, their natural curiosity is encouraged, inspiring them to explore unfamiliar subjects and discover new interests.

For the Year 3 pupils, this visit was an opportunity to explore two completely different professional worlds in a single day and understand that every career involves its own challenges, responsibilities and possibilities.

By connecting education with real-life experiences, Savremena Primary School creates a learning environment that extends beyond textbooks and helps children develop the knowledge, confidence and essential skills they will need in the future.
