ECO-STUDENTS ATTEND WWF WORKSHOPS ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
As an eco-school, Savremena regularly organises different educational events and workshops in which the children learn about environmental protection and raise their eco-awareness. On Monday, 9 December, Savremena’s primary school students took part in interesting and instructive workshops on plant and animal species, led by representatives from WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).
Split into three groups, the students took turns in brief workshops in three areas: pollination, plant taxonomy and food chain. In addition to having fun in interesting and interactive educational games and tasks, the students learnt a lot of valuable information.
WITHOUT POLLINATION, WE WOULDN’T HAVE DELICIOUS FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
In the pollination workshop, the students were presented with different fruits, vegetables and grains, and their task was to guess who pollinates a specific plant. This way, they learnt about pollination, the importance of pollinators and what would happen without them. The students particularly liked the causality between plants and animals and their behaviour.
GUESS THE PLANT!
The students also played an interesting plant quiz! Using a herbarium and a plant identification key, the students guessed types of plants. The little botanists identified the plants based on their morphological characteristics and the elimination method. This association game allowed the students to practice not only their biology knowledge, but also their deduction skills.
LEARNING ABOUT THE FOOD CHAIN
- What is the food chain?
- What species participate in the food chain?
- Does it refer solely to animals or are people and plants part of it, as well?
Savremena’s students were tasked to create a food chain based on the animal species they were given, after which the WWF representatives answered their questions, helping them learn more about this interesting topic.
WHAT IS WWF?
WWF was created in 1961 as the World Wildlife Fund, with the aim of protecting endangered animal species. In the past five decades, it emerged as one of the biggest and most renowned environmental protection organisations in the world. WWF has more than 5 million followers, offices in over 90 countries and invests substantial amounts in environmental protection projects and campaigns each year. The goal of these activities is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s ecosystem, reduce man’s influence on natural habitats, preserve the key areas and species, and encourage people to live in greater harmony with nature. In the future they can count on the help of Savremena’s eco-students, who are environmentally aware and additionally motivated by these instructive and useful workshops.
