Corner Day at Savremena: A world of truly different and interesting workshops

Playing, fun and socialisation at Savremena

Another Corner Day at Savremena has taken place. Through the rich programme of the workshops, students saw science in a completely new light and once again proved that learning can be an interesting and joyful experience. When children take an entirely different approach to science, their curiosity, passion and desire for knowledge can only improve.

When a child grows up in an environment such as Savremena, they grow into an inquisitive, responsible, and creative individual capable of solving problems and overcoming challenges. Having got used to this kind of mindset, they can apply it to every segment of their life in the future.

The main goal of this event was for children to familiarise themselves with the fun side of science, fall in love with it, and prepare for lifelong learning.

This day and the workshops lived up to the students’ expectations. To say that they were delighted is an understatement. We are especially pleased that their inquisitive eyes were glistening with happiness because they were learning lots of new things while having fun.

We designed, constructed and put a robot into motion and learned about programming

The students have already entered the world of programming, in a way tailored to their age. Programming enhances the development of soft skills, such as problem solving, logical thinking and determination. In this workshop, the students used the hardware they had at their disposal to design a robot and then they wrote code in a programme to set the robot going.

Another workshop which left the students amazed in every sense of the word was the one with experiments in artificial intelligence. This doesn’t surprise us as the world of technology is Savremena students’ natural habitat, where they can express and develop their creativity. They are surrounded by technology from day one and learn how to use it to their advantage as much as possible. The simple experiments introduced them to machine learning.

We developed our speaking skills and enriched our vocabulary

They were no less delighted with the “Once upon a time” workshop because there is no one who enjoys reading fairy tales more than kids. This time, they played the role of authors, which they enjoyed just as much. They were given answers to the following questions: how does one conceive a fairy tale? what is its morphology? They completely immersed themselves in the world of imagination and came up with stories in both Serbian and English. There are kids who grow up in countries where multiple languages are used alternatingly.

Interestingly, research has shown that children who learn more than one language are by definition more creative and better at completing certain tasks and acquiring skills. If children are learning another language in addition to their mother tongue, even if this is happening at a very early age, they are improving their cognitive abilities and building a better foundation for learning foreign languages more easily in the future. This workshop gave them an opportunity to test their knowledge of English. And let us tell you, Savremena students know a great many words and expressions in English.

In a workshop called “Dissecting the language of the media”, students analysed expressions and slogans used in commercials and advertising, judging their level of truthfulness, suggestiveness, and logic. They had the most fun while coming up with commercials for an (imaginary) product by themselves, which gave them new insight into the various ways language is used in the media. The aim of the workshop was to draw their attention to the power of language and words.

We received answers to various questions and satisfied our curiosity

If someone is hungry for knowledge and exploration, it’s certainly Savremena students. Every one of our students has a sense of adventure. Children like discovering new things, arriving at answers, and solving mysteries.

This is why a workshop on illusions and another one called “Mystery box” were particularly entertaining. The students had to put their hand in the box and guess what was inside based on their sense of touch. By focusing on describing certain objects in as much detail as possible, the students further developed their speaking skills. During the workshop on illusions, they learned through experiments how perceptual errors occur and what kind of psychological effects they may have.

We reminded ourselves of the importance of environmental protection

Savremena is a school that teaches students about the importance of environmental protection. That’s why Corner Day couldn’t avoid ecological topics. The students discussed endangered areas around the world and the importance of the protection of forests and rivers worldwide. We took environmental awareness to a new level.

Every day at Savremena is fun. That’s why students come to school with a smile on their face.
