Children’s Week at Savremena: Kind Words, Friendship and Small Gestures That Matter

The first day of Children’s Week was dedicated to friendship, kindness and messages that reminded pupils how important it is to be a good friend

Children’s Week at Savremena Primary School began on Monday, 5 October, with activities dedicated to friendship, kind words and thoughtfulness towards others.

Inspired by the message “A kind word warms every heart”, pupils reflected on how the things they say and do can affect the people around them. Their task was to write down one positive quality of a friend or classmate, one kind word they enjoy hearing, and one thoughtful thing they could do for someone else.

Their messages became part of the “Tree of Kind Words”, but the meaning of the activity went far beyond the creative task itself. Pupils had an opportunity to notice the positive qualities of their peers and think about the ways in which friendship is built through everyday words and actions.

On the same day, they also made friendship bracelets, which became small symbols of connection, support and positive relationships among children. Through conversation, creativity and working together, the beginning of Children’s Week was filled with activities that helped pupils understand how even the smallest gestures can carry great meaning.

The day showed that friendship is not simply something children talk about, but something they can actively build through kindness, attention and respect.

Friendship Is Also Learnt through Everyday Experiences

By thinking about the positive qualities of their classmates, pupils practised recognising the good in others and expressing their appreciation openly. When they wrote down the words they themselves enjoy hearing, they also learnt to understand their own feelings better, while considering something kind they could do for another person encouraged them to think about the needs and emotions of those around them.

Simple activities like these play an important role in growing up. They help children develop empathy, gratitude, mutual respect and the ability to build positive relationships with their peers.

Making friendship bracelets added another creative dimension to the day. As they chose details, made their bracelets and shared them with one another, pupils expressed kindness and a sense of belonging through a practical and enjoyable activity.

At Savremena Primary School, a child’s development goes beyond academic learning. Social and emotional skills also have an important place, helping pupils communicate more effectively, cooperate, resolve misunderstandings and understand others.

This is why Children’s Week is another valuable opportunity to encourage important values through activities that are close to children’s experiences and meaningful in both school life and everyday relationships.

A Kind Word and a Small Gesture Can Build Strong Friendships

The first day of Children’s Week showed that important conversations with children do not always need to begin with big topics. Sometimes a kind word, a sincere compliment or a small gesture of attention is enough to help pupils understand how meaningful their behaviour towards others can be.

The messages they wrote, the “Tree of Kind Words” they created together and the friendship bracelets they made connected creativity with important life values. Pupils learnt how to receive a kind word, but also how to offer one, how to recognise positive qualities in their friends and how their own actions can contribute to a more supportive atmosphere.

Activities like these help create a sense of belonging and security within the school environment. When children know they can rely on one another and understand that their words matter, they find it easier to cooperate, express themselves freely and develop stronger relationships.

Children’s Week at Savremena therefore began with a simple but important message: friendship is built every day through the words we choose, the things we do and the attention we show to the people around us.
