Basketball marked Day Three of School Sports Week at Savremena
Teamwork, great plays and sportsmanship made for another exciting day, with class VIII-1 taking the tournament title
School Sports Week at Savremena Primary School continued with its third day, dedicated to one of the students’ favourite team sports – basketball. Following table tennis and athletics, students had another opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, this time through teamwork, cooperation and a shared determination to compete for every point.
At Savremena, physical activity is an important part of students’ overall development. This is why sports days are not simply a break from lessons, but an extension of the values encouraged in the classroom every day: independence, responsibility, perseverance, mutual respect and a willingness to contribute to a shared goal.
Basketball provided the perfect opportunity to put all these values into practice. Passing, drives to the basket, successful shots and battles for possession kept the action moving, while students on the sidelines enthusiastically supported their classmates. Scoring mattered, but so did finding an open teammate, learning from mistakes, staying focused and playing as part of a team.
This approach reflects Savremena’s broader vision of education, where the school day is about much more than lessons and grades. Through a wide range of experiences, students discover their interests, develop their talents and build skills that will remain valuable long after a single school competition has ended.

Teamwork takes VIII-1 to victory
After a series of exciting matches, class VIII-1 had the greatest reason to celebrate, securing first place in the basketball tournament with an excellent team performance.
Their victory demonstrated precisely what makes team sports so valuable for students’ development. A strong result does not depend on one individual alone. Players need to follow their teammates, communicate effectively, make quick decisions, take responsibility when needed and trust the other members of their team.
These are also skills that Savremena develops through a variety of curricular and extracurricular activities. Students are encouraged to collaborate, share ideas, solve problems and take an active role in their own education. The basketball court is simply another place where they can put these skills into practice.
The atmosphere beyond the court was equally important. Cheering and encouragement showed that one class’s sporting success can go hand in hand with a strong sense of community throughout the school. Students had the opportunity to spend time together in a different setting, support their peers and learn how to respond positively to both victory and defeat.
At Savremena, we believe that school should provide space for different talents to flourish. Some students excel in mathematics, others in art, technology or languages, while others shine on the sports court. Activities like these give students another opportunity to demonstrate their strengths.
Congratulations to class VIII-1 on taking first place and to all the teams that participated in the tournament!
Sport as part of the Savremena school experience
Table tennis, athletics and now basketball have already demonstrated just how varied School Sports Week can be. Each discipline has brought a different challenge, allowing students to discover where their individual strengths lie.
This diversity is an important part of the student experience at Savremena. The goal is not for everyone to excel in the same area, but for every student to have opportunities to explore their interests, develop their potential and build confidence through activities they enjoy. Alongside academic knowledge, particular attention is therefore given to sport, creativity, modern technology, collaboration and practical experiences.
Physical activity also plays an important role in healthy development. Through sport, students build discipline and perseverance, learn how to set goals and overcome challenges, and develop an understanding of the importance of regular activity and healthy habits.
The third day of School Sports Week therefore brought much more than a basketball tournament winner. It provided another opportunity for students to learn through experience, stay active, support one another and enjoy a school day they will remember.
Well done to VIII-1 and to all our Savremena students, who once again demonstrated that some of the most valuable lessons can be learnt beyond the classroom.
