Autumn in Digital Colours: Creative Work by Year 3 Students

Year 3 students revisited their Year 2 knowledge through a creative digital task inspired by autumn

Year 3 students at Savremena Primary School took on a new digital challenge and demonstrated how knowledge acquired in the previous year can be applied in a creative and engaging way. While revisiting content from Year 2, they were given the task of using digital tools to depict autumn as they see it.

Their screens soon filled with treetops in warm autumn colours, fallen leaves, clouds, rain, parks and different landscapes. Although everyone was given the same task, each piece reflected its creator’s individual ideas. Students independently selected colours and shapes and decided how to arrange different elements, transforming their ideas into original digital drawings.

Through this activity, the students did much more than revise what they already knew. They practised using digital tools, accuracy and navigating a digital environment, while simultaneously developing creativity, independence and the ability to turn an idea into a tangible result.

Connecting previous knowledge with practical activities allows students to learn through experience, explore the possibilities of technology and gradually become more confident and independent in the digital world.

Building Digital Skills from the Earliest Years

Digital literacy today means much more than simply knowing how to use a computer. From an early age, children need to understand the possibilities offered by digital tools and learn to use them independently, thoughtfully and creatively. At Savremena, previously acquired knowledge is therefore continually connected with new tasks and situations in which students can apply it in practice.

By revisiting content from Year 2, the students had an opportunity to demonstrate how confidently they could use familiar digital tools. They selected shapes and colours, drew, combined different elements and organised the available space to present their vision of autumn as clearly as possible. In this way, a simple seasonal theme became an opportunity to practise digital dexterity, planning and practical problem-solving.

At Savremena, technology always has a clear purpose in learning. Students discover how it can help them create, find solutions and communicate their ideas. This gradually builds confidence in a digital environment while encouraging curiosity, initiative and the ability to apply knowledge in new situations.

When a student turns a blank digital canvas into an original piece of work, the result is more than an image. It is another small step towards confident, creative and responsible use of technology.

Knowledge That Is Applied, Connected and Built Upon

One of the important principles of learning at Savremena is that knowledge does not end with a single lesson or school year. It is connected, applied and built upon through new challenges. Revisiting Year 2 content therefore gave Year 3 students an opportunity to recognise how much they already knew and use that knowledge independently.

Through an autumn-inspired task, they developed their digital competencies while also practising focus, creative thinking, patience and the ability to transform an initial idea into a tangible result. Each completed piece offered a different interpretation of the same theme, giving students the freedom to express their creativity through technology.

Experiences like these help children see technology from an early age as a tool for learning, exploring and creating. When digital skills are developed gradually through age-appropriate activities, students gain the confidence they need to take on increasingly complex challenges.

This time, all it took was imagining autumn and allowing creativity to do the rest. The result was a collection of diverse digital works and another valuable experience demonstrating how learning can develop knowledge, skills and imagination at the same time.
