Art lesson at the “Blok” gallery – visiting the exhibition of Suzana Vulović
Students of Primary School Savremena had an unusual art lesson in which they visited the “Blok” gallery nearby. Year 6 and 7 students attended an exhibition of paintings called the “Structure of Memory”, the author of which is their art teacher, Suzana Vulović.
The concept of this exhibition involves a series of drawings and collages that use photography as a means of expression. The works from the series the “Structure of Memory” are not a mimetic representation of an event — because memories can also include colours, energy, feelings, or smells. Memories bear the truth, and they are not the same as recollections, because they can be archetypal, shared and associated with the unconscious.
In this case, photography is a vision captured, visuality I’ve observed around me, but by cancelling its documentary context, and extracting only visual sensations and artistic value, my work becomes an allegory, a creative metaphor
Suzana Vulović about the installation.
Art teacher Suzana Vulović holds a Master’s degree in painting. Her primary field of work and research is painting. In her research, she re-examines complex and multifaceted phenomena we face on daily basis.
Her artistic practice is a reflection of reality, current moment, but also the period that has shaped her works. Her artistic enterprise deals with cultural habits, social and physical environment where she lives and works. For Suzana, a work of art is a moment that integrates our entire past, and creates a new experience.
Students develop a critical awareness and a habit of attending cultural events
Students of Primary School Savremena analysed the paintings at the exhibition, feeling like real art critics and curators of sorts, because they had a task to verbally express everything they saw at the gallery. Activities like this one strengthen their cultural awareness, and introduce them to the world of art at an early age by developing a habit of visiting galleries and “getting the feeling for” the art realm.
A visit to a gallery which involves leaving the school is in line with the “classroom without walls” concept promoted by the Primary School Savremena. This concept is focused on various engaging, educational and cultural activities realised outside the classroom – where students can learn in the field, gaining direct experience.
