A visit from two lawyer mums: The classroom becomes a courtroom for an important lesson in justice

Through role-play and a simulated trial, Year 3 pupils explored the legal profession while developing critical thinking, communication skills and a sense of fairness

What happens during a real trial, what does a lawyer do and why is it important to hear both sides before making a decision? Year 3 pupils at Savremena Primary School discovered the answers in a particularly engaging way, thanks to a visit from two mothers who work as lawyers.

The visiting mums prepared an unusual activity, transforming the classroom into a miniature courtroom where every pupil received a role. The children became judges, lawyers, suspects and other participants in a simulated court case, giving everyone an opportunity to experience what taking part in legal proceedings might involve.

Instead of simply listening to explanations about the justice system, pupils became active participants in the trial. They needed to listen carefully, consider different arguments, respect the rules and try to understand different perspectives on the same situation.

Activities like this demonstrate how engaging learning can become when knowledge is connected with real-life experiences. At Savremena Primary School, pupils have opportunities to explore different professions, ask questions freely and develop essential skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

This time, through enthusiastic participation and thoughtful discussion, the children discovered that justice is more than an abstract concept. It is an important value that needs to be understood and applied in everyday life.

The experience combined curiosity, practical learning and meaningful life lessons, showing how even a familiar classroom can become a place for discovering new ideas and developing important personal qualities.

One classroom, many roles and important decisions

The visit from two lawyer mums gave pupils an opportunity to explore a profession they may have seen portrayed in films or television programmes but had rarely considered in detail. This time, they could experience different courtroom responsibilities for themselves.

Once the roles had been assigned, the classroom became a space for presenting arguments, listening to different opinions and considering the circumstances of an imaginary case. While some pupils represented particular positions, others were responsible for listening carefully and reflecting on what they heard.

Through role-play, the children began to understand how much responsibility comes with making decisions that affect others. They discovered that having an opinion is only the beginning: it is equally important to explain their reasoning, listen respectfully and consider the available facts.

The activity encouraged the development of critical thinking, communication skills, confidence and empathy. Pupils practised expressing their views, respecting other people’s opinions and approaching situations from different perspectives.

These are precisely the skills that receive particular attention at Savremena Primary School. Through active learning, collaboration and creative activities, children are encouraged to think independently and find solutions rather than simply memorising information.

By the end of the simulated trial, the pupils had reached an important conclusion: making a fair decision requires listening to everyone involved, considering the facts and acting responsibly.

The experience offered far more than an introduction to the legal profession. It gave the children an opportunity to practise important life skills in a memorable and meaningful setting.

At Savremena, real experiences prepare children for life

At Savremena Primary School, education combines academic knowledge, practical experiences and the development of skills that help children understand the world around them. Visits from parents are therefore a valuable part of school life, giving pupils opportunities to discover different professions in an engaging and personal way.

When children participate in activities such as a simulated trial, they not only learn about a particular career but also strengthen abilities they will use throughout their lives. They practise attentive listening, reasoned discussion, collaboration and responsibility for their decisions.

One of the most valuable aspects of this activity was the opportunity to explore fairness, respect for rules and consideration for others through direct experience. These values are important not only in a courtroom but also in the classroom, among friends and in everyday situations.

This approach is one of the things that makes Savremena different. Pupils are given opportunities to explore, ask questions, express opinions and gain knowledge through memorable experiences.

Thanks to the two visiting lawyers, an ordinary school day became an engaging lesson about the legal profession, responsibility, fairness and understanding others.

Perhaps most importantly, the pupils discovered for themselves that every story has more than one side and that making a fair decision requires careful thought, patience and respect for everyone involved.
