A look at the Finnish model of education in practise
How an interdisciplinary approach provides functional knowledge and inspires creativity in students
This week, as part of the New Nordic School project, fifth-grade students enjoyed the beauty of this project in their geography and Serbian language classes. The current topic this trimester is called “Let the forest be with you” and the students will work on that topic from all school subjects using different approaches.
The first one who started working on this topic with students was geography teacher, Marko Ostojić. He presented to them the vegetation zones on the Earth, the influence of the Earth’s rotation and revolution on their formation, as well as the position of the Earth, the angle of incidence of the sun’s rays and the distribution of precipitation as factors in their formation. After that, the students watched short videos about each vegetation zone and the types of plants and animals that inhabit them. In the final part of the class, the robot Pepper came, with whom the students did a quiz and thus checked how much new knowledge they had acquired from the class.
Teacher Marija Šaponjić integrated the same topic in Serbian language and literature classes in an interesting way. Through the topic of forests, the students improved their existing knowledge about the cases they’ve covered. On the process board, students had the task of thinking of examples for each case that contained forest terms. Supporting the creative process, the students, in cooperation with the teacher, also worked on case synonymy in order to make understanding the complex case system of the Serbian language as easy as possible, but also to memorise and remember it as long as possible. In this way, students are also preparing for lifelong learning, which this subject enables them to do.
Primary School Savremena pays special attention to the application of knowledge, and that is precisely why we recognised the value of the New Nordic School project. The Finnish educational model, which we successfully integrate into our teaching practise, strengthens exactly what is crucial for a child to realise its full potential – creativity, applying and connecting knowledge from different subject areas.
