Years 5 and 6 on an Excursion: History, Culture and New Experiences Beyond the Classroom
Savremena pupils visited Topola, Oplenac, Orašac and Aranđelovac and explored important places connected with Serbian history and culture
Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from Savremena Primary School went on an excursion during which they visited Topola, Oplenac, Orašac and Aranđelovac.
The trip gave them an opportunity to connect what they learn in the classroom with places, events and stories that hold an important place in Serbian history and culture. Instead of encountering historical facts only in textbooks, pupils were able to experience the locations themselves, ask questions, exchange impressions and develop a deeper understanding of topics they had already explored at school.
Visits to Topola, Oplenac and Orašac brought important historical themes closer to the pupils, while their time in Aranđelovac added new experiences, shared moments and opportunities for discovery.
At Savremena, excursions have precisely this value. They connect classroom learning with the wider world and allow pupils to develop curiosity, independence and the ability to link knowledge from different areas through direct experience.
For the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, this excursion was therefore much more than a visit to new places. It was an opportunity to experience history in a different way, spend quality time together and return with new knowledge and shared memories.

When History Comes Out of the Textbook
One of the greatest benefits of school excursions is the opportunity for pupils to connect knowledge with real places and experiences. When historical events are explored not only in the classroom but also at the locations connected with them, learning becomes more vivid, meaningful and memorable.
Visiting Topola, Oplenac and Orašac allowed pupils to expand their knowledge and view history from a different perspective. Observing the surroundings, discussing the significance of each place and connecting new information with what they already know encourage active learning and critical thinking.
This kind of learning is an important part of the approach at Savremena. Pupils are not only passive listeners. They explore, ask questions and learn through experience, developing curiosity, independence and the ability to apply knowledge in different contexts.
At the same time, travelling together offers lessons that cannot be found in a textbook. Pupils spend time with one another, strengthen friendships, cooperate and develop a greater sense of responsibility towards the group.
The excursion therefore brought together education, friendship and exploration in an experience whose value went far beyond simply being outside the usual school environment.
A Journey That Connects Knowledge and Togetherness
Alongside new knowledge, the excursion gave Year 5 and Year 6 pupils an opportunity to experience learning in a different environment. Travelling together, discovering new places and spending time outside their usual routine help strengthen relationships and create memories that remain long after the excursion ends.
Topola, Oplenac, Orašac and Aranđelovac were different stops on the same journey, with each location offering a new opportunity for conversation, exploration and connecting knowledge.
Experiences like these are important because they help pupils develop independence and resourcefulness, while also learning how to function as part of a group, respect shared arrangements and look after one another.
At Savremena, education therefore extends beyond the classroom. Learning continues through journeys, encounters with new places and stories that turn textbook content into real experience.
For the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, this excursion was exactly that: an experience in which knowledge, friendship and exploration became part of the same story.
