We celebrated through beautiful words International Mother Language Day

Words that carry meaning

February 21st is International Mother Language Day – a day when the world celebrates the diversity of languages and the culture transmitted through them. At Savremena Elementary School, we marked this day in a way that makes sense: through words that children love, use, and that mean something to them.

The task was simple – choose words that are most beautiful to you, most important, or that you simply love to say. No rules. No limitations. Just honesty. And children chose. “Mama.” “Love.” “Thank you.” “Sorry.” “Incredible.” “Intelligent.” Some chose words that carry emotional weight. Some chose words that sound beautiful. Some chose words in their mother tongue, some in a language they’re learning. And all these words ended up on the board – as a mosaic of what language is: a tool for expression, for connection, for understanding.

There were no right or wrong answers. There were only words that mean something. And that was the point.

The Beauty of language through discussion

Mother language isn’t just grammar and spelling. It’s the way we think, feel, communicate. It’s cultural heritage we carry with us, no matter where we are.

During the activity, children talked about why they chose those specific words. Why “mama” always sounds warm. Why “thank you” and “sorry” have the power to change the atmosphere in a conversation. Why some languages have words without direct translation, but perfectly describe an emotion everyone understands.

They talked about the beauty of language – not just Serbian, but all languages they speak, learn, hear around them. About how every language has its own rhythm, its own character, its own way of expressing the same things differently. And that this isn’t a flaw – it’s richness.

Children at Savremena come from different families, speak different languages at home, learn foreign languages at school. And instead of being a barrier, this becomes an advantage. Because understanding that there are multiple ways to say the same thing – that’s the foundation of empathy.

Language as a bridge

International Mother Language Day isn’t just about celebrating one language. It’s about understanding that language isn’t just a set of rules – it’s identity, culture, a bridge between people.

Through this activity, children understood something important: that words have power. That “mama” in any language carries the same love. That “thank you” and “sorry” build relationships. That “incredible” can describe a feeling that has no boundaries. And they understood that mother language isn’t something you learn in school – it’s something you carry with you. But to preserve it, nurture it, and use it with pride – that’s a choice they make every day.

Savremena builds children who understand that language isn’t just a communication tool. It’s a bridge between cultures, between generations, between people. And when these children choose words they love – they choose words that build, connect, and inspire. February 21st has passed. But words remain. And the beauty of language continues – every day, in every conversation, in every word we speak.
