Through the self-portrait, we learn about ourselves

First steps toward self-discovery through a self-portrait

In their art classes, students faced the task of drawing their own faces – a task that is much more than simple drawing. Scientific studies show that creating self-portraits helps children develop self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and introspective thinking. For example, research from Boston University has shown that children who regularly draw themselves are better at recognizing and expressing their own feelings, and also demonstrate greater empathy toward others. Through drawing, children have the opportunity to focus on their personal traits and reflect on how others perceive them, which strengthens their emotional maturity and self-confidence.

Details that shape us

Students focused on the details of their faces – the shape of their eyes, smiles, and hair color – but each pencil stroke was also a small step toward understanding themselves. Through drawing, children explored how they see themselves and how they want to be seen by others, which is extremely important for the development of self-confidence and identity. This activity also develops fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and encourages careful observation of the world around them. At the same time, students learn to plan and structure their drawings, which strengthens decision-making skills and critical thinking.

Stories in lines and colors

Each self-portrait is unique – from facial expressions to color choices – and every line tells a story about how the student feels. The drawings become a tool for communication, allowing children to express emotions they may not yet be able to put into words. Through these visual stories, students also learn to recognize the feelings of their peers, which is foundational for developing empathy and social skills. This form of expression helps children become more self-aware and understand that it is okay to express their emotions, building emotional resilience and a sense of security.

Drawing helps us understand ourselves better

At Savremena Primary School, education goes beyond books – here, children learn to observe, understand, and connect with themselves and others. Tasks like creating self-portraits help students develop introspection, self-confidence, and emotional literacy. Through these activities, children become more aware of their feelings, learn to express them, and simultaneously strengthen their connections with others. Every pencil stroke in the classroom is not just drawing – it is a small step toward understanding themselves and the world around them. At the same time, children gain experience in valuing their efforts and recognizing the importance of individual contributions, which forms the foundation for independence and critical thinking.
