The Travelling Chest of Courage at Savremena

Students discover that true courage lives in everyday acts

During the week dedicated to the virtue of courage, students of Savremena Primary School explored what it truly means to be brave through a series of creative and meaningful activities. Their inspiration came from the story “Nadin’s Health Reservoir” from Željana Radojičić Lukić’s book “Spring Rush with the Fairy Đurđica.” Through storytelling, discussions, and teamwork, students learned that courage isn’t only about great heroic deeds — it also lives in everyday moments of honesty, kindness, and perseverance.

As a symbol of unity and support, the students created a “Tree of Courage,” decorating it with drawings, messages, and real-life examples of brave actions. Each leaf represented a unique story — a moment when someone showed strength and determination. Alongside the tree, a special Travelling Chest of Courage moved from class to class. Each group filled it with their reflections, notes, and small symbols of courage, turning it into a growing collection of shared inspiration. The activity strengthened students’ self-confidence, empathy, and awareness that courage takes many forms — and that everyone carries it within.

Courage through art, empathy, and action

The theme of courage was explored across different subjects. In Serbian language classes, students wrote essays on “When I was brave”, sharing their personal experiences and feelings. During art classes, they painted symbols of courage using vibrant colours and bold shapes that reflected strength and hope. In civic education, they discussed what it means to stand up for what’s right, to help a friend, or to admit a mistake. Each lesson revealed that courage is not the absence of fear — it’s the decision to act despite it.

The week concluded with a humanitarian activity for the children of the Drop-in Centre, where students collected and prepared small gifts as a sign of care and solidarity. Through this gesture, they learned that courage also means compassion and the will to make a difference for others.

By the end of the project, students understood that bravery is built step by step — through every kind word, every honest action, and every moment of perseverance. With projects like this, Savremena Primary School continues to nurture values that shape confident, empathetic, and responsible young individuals. 💛
