Space through preschoolers' eyes

Planets, stars and imagination

During the “Space” project, preschoolers at Savremena Primary School learned about planets, the Sun, the Moon, and stars through play, conversation, and creative activities. The result? A classroom full of colors, imagination, and little astronauts who now know that Saturn is the planet with rings, that Jupiter is the largest planet, and that Earth is not alone in the universe. Before they picked up paints and paper, the little ones watched educational videos about planets, listened to stories about astronauts, learned what the Solar System looks like, and why planets orbit the Sun.

They talked about what life in space would be like, whether there’s water on other planets, and why astronauts wear spacesuits. Every question was an opportunity for a new discovery, every answer led to new curiosity. The teacher carefully guided the conversation, encouraging children to ask questions and imagine what it would be like to travel through space. The atmosphere was filled with wonder and curiosity – that genuine, childlike interest that drives real learning.

From Theory to Creation

When theoretical knowledge was ready, the creative phase began – making wreaths with planets and space motifs. In front of the children were cardboard, paints, scissors, and a pile of small colored planets, stars, rockets, and astronauts. Each preschooler was given the task of making their own wreath – a circular frame to decorate with planets, the sun, the moon, and stars. Some chose all the planets of the Solar System, others focused on their favorites – Earth, Mars, Saturn. There were wreaths with a large sun in the center, wreaths decorated with colorful stars, wreaths with rockets “flying” to unknown worlds.

Children painted, glued, created, and talked about their work. Each wreath was unique, a reflection of the imagination of the child who made it. And while they worked, they learned – about the colors of planets, their sizes, which one is closest to the Sun and which is farthest. Mathematics, science, and art merged into one experience that was equally fun and educational. And in the end, each child took their wreath home – as a reminder of the day they traveled through space without leaving the classroom.

A New Era at Savremena – Preschool Program

Starting this year, Savremena Primary School also has its preschool program, designed so that the youngest learn through play, exploration, and projects that spark curiosity. The “Space” project was a perfect example of how preschoolers can master complex topics when presented in an understandable and fun way. Such projects help children develop critical thinking, creativity, and a love of learning from an early age.

The first generation of preschoolers at Savremena is already showing that learning can be an exciting adventure – and that there are no limits to what the youngest can learn when given the right support, inspiration, and space to explore. Because at Savremena, education starts early – and it begins with curiosity, imagination, and the feeling that the world, and even the universe, is within reach.
