Savremena Students in a Digital Quest for Knowledge

Commemorating the Day of Remembrance for Dositej Obradović

According to the school calendar, April 10 is dedicated to the Day of Remembrance for Dositej Obradović – a prominent figure in Serbian education, literature, and culture. At the initiative of the Dositej Obradović Endowment, this specific date – the day of the great thinker’s death (April 10, or March 28 according to the old calendar) – was chosen as the official day of remembrance, as it is considered by historians to be the only reliable and relevant date associated with his life.

Dimitrije Dositej Obradović, born in 1739 (or 1742) in the Romanian village of Čakovo in the Banat region, near Timișoara, was a Serbian philosopher, educator, reformer, and the most important Serbian writer of the 18th century. He is regarded as the leading advocate of Enlightenment ideas among all South Slavs. He strongly supported the use of the vernacular in writing, believing that books should be accessible and understandable to all speakers of the language. Through his works, he emphasized the importance of virtues and life values such as kindness, charity, love, tolerance, friendship, respect, and cooperation.

Who Was Dositej: A Research-Based Lesson in a Digital Environment

Eighth-grade students at Savremena Primary School marked this important date with lessons dedicated to Dositej Obradović’s autobiographical work “The Life and Adventures”, following the curriculum while applying modern learning methods.

The lessons began with research activities: using the internet, students independently gathered information about Dositej Obradović’s life and work. They then organized and presented their findings in digital format. Some of the content was enhanced with QR codes, which the students created themselves to make additional information and video materials easily accessible.

Technology as a Learning Ally

This project once again demonstrated how successfully Savremena students integrate technology into their everyday learning. Through creative research and teamwork, they not only acquired knowledge in literature and history, but also developed digital skills, presentation abilities, and critical thinking.

At Primary School Savremena, students are encouraged every day to connect knowledge across different subjects and use modern tools to learn in a way that is engaging, meaningful, and useful for their future.
