As part of the project “Happy Learning for a Values-Based Society”, implemented through integrative teaching, third-grade students at Savremena Primary School had the opportunity to explore the world of the past in a creative and inspiring way, while discovering values that are passed down through generations. The starting point of the project was the fairy tale “The Antique Shop”, whose warm and symbolic story opened space for thinking about the importance of continuity, memories, and heritage. Guided by its themes, students connected knowledge from different subjects – Serbian language, science and social studies, mathematics, art, and the digital world. In this way, learning gained a new dimension: it was no longer just about acquiring information, but about understanding, connecting, and applying knowledge in a meaningful context. Through research-based activities, students developed critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the relationship between the past and the present, becoming active participants in their own learning process.

Creativity that brings the past to life
A particularly engaging part of the project was the activity “Hairstyles and Fashion in the Past”, through which students explored how people lived, dressed, and expressed their style in different historical periods. This activity encouraged curiosity, imagination, and creative expression, while also helping students understand social changes and cultural patterns over time. With great dedication and the support of their parents, students designed authentic hairstyles and outfits inspired by past eras, carefully paying attention to every detail. A special highlight was a small celebration held in the school yard – a student fashion show where they proudly presented their creations. The school yard transformed into a stage of the past, filled with colours, smiles, and unique stories. Each student had the opportunity to express themselves, while developing confidence, presentation skills, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly. On that day, both the classroom and the school environment became a space where knowledge was not only learned, but truly experienced.
Values that last – learning through experience and community
Through this approach, students developed a wide range of important skills – from connecting knowledge across different subjects to understanding the relationship between past and present, as well as fostering respect for tradition and cultural heritage. A special value of the project was the strong collaboration with parents, who actively participated in creating these “living memories” together with their children, strengthening the sense of community and belonging. This type of learning clearly shows how powerful education can be when it is based on experience, exploration, and creativity. At Savremena Primary School, we place a strong emphasis on such approaches, combining traditional values with modern teaching methods and the support of technology. Our students have once again shown that learning can be joyful, creative, and meaningful – a process that shapes not only knowledge, but also character. These are the moments that stay with them and become the foundation for their future growth. ✨
